damn, some people are really sneaky in trying to hijack traffic of innocent netizens just looking for a brewery or beer review site and/or a coffee enthusiast platform

Now it seems to have gone through, but I thought it'd send you to thebire.com/forum instead of just to thebire.com. Maybe I should just keep thebore.net as an alias instead of forcing people to the new domain. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

edit: I put an .htaccess file that was supposed to fix the more simple domain thing to preserving the paths but it doesn't seem to do anything. Hope people can not get too turned on by the wlw image or blinded by the red background to see the forum link.

Forwarding is still weird. I kept getting an SSL error with my old bookmark, thought the whole site went down or something until I saw some reddit recommendation to change https to http when getting an SSl error. Not sure why but then it worked

The botched bookmark link
https://www.thebore.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?fid=2

Is there a way to fix this? I'm just thinking about how there's maybe some people who check in pretty irregular and just happen to have an old bookmark saved and now think the site is gone. If it's a big hassle then no need though, maybe I'm just overthinking it.

My assumption was that SSL would automatically update over time but I will take a look. Maybe I have to generate a new key or something.

Okay, so what I think is the problem is that thebire.com's SSL is correct but thebore.net's must not be because it's supposed to just direct you to the homepage. (Since I couldn't get the redirect to properly operate.) BUT thebore.net's old one isn't inherently wrong because it's the same exact server.

I think the problem with your bookmark is that it specifies a particular URL which thebore.net ignores now. I imagine there may be a way to "correct" this but for the same reason that I stopped trying to correct the redirect, the tools offered by the host aren't particular enough and my knowledge of what to do at the lower level is nowhere near good enough. I don't seem to have access to thebore.net's stuff anymore because I setup that redirect.

I understand your argument and it does concern me but using Bayesian probability I have to conclude that the number of people who bookmarked a specific URL like you did and wouldn't jump back to the main URL as a check is small. I imagine most people would have bookmarked /forum/ only so it shouldn't trigger the same. I actually have wondered if people getting the now red homepage would be confused.

I stupidly switched to the forum's emerald theme and there's no drop-down menu to switch away from this monstrosity.

Save me from forum theme genocide Benji.

That got me to thinking, I think I will delete the other themes and clone the default one to make an actual dark theme or at least darker theme. I've messed with stuff enough by now that I can attempt that and it's a better idea than the one I had about slowly darkening the main one. I'll probably start by just changing the background to black and making colors darker and people can suggest tweaks to that.

I just took a look at the themes since it had been a while and I think I may add a mobile-specific theme that's become available from somebody since the "responsive" shit doesn't seem to actually ever work. One problem is that likes will not immediately be available on it but if people would be willing to try it just to see if it's any good then if they prefer it I can probably figure the likes out if turning them off and back on doesn't solve it.

It probably shouldn't effect anything on the default theme but if in a couple days you visit and everything's broken this will be the reason.

I can only find the option to switch this in the user settings. I am using it right now for irony and funny.

However my amusement is diminished because I can easily and intentionally change it back at any time :(

my life is immeasurably worse

emerald should be the only theme. And the broken image should be even bigger.

I swear that wasn't there yesterday but I'm also a moron.

The "myBB" dark theme isn't too bad.

I am going to add three different "mobile test" themes later today, they will be quite similar but have some differences. The intent is not to keep all three but see which, if any of them, people like then bring that one up to functionality. One of them is supposed to be fine for both desktop AND mobile and is based on what MyBB is doing for their eventual proper theme. Things that I've added or changed that may not be available during these tests like the newsfeed or likes not working are not the purpose of this testing, those kinds of technical errors are things that will work on what we choose after we choose. Not being able to post or whatever is obviously an actual problem but that type of stuff should work and will be addressed if doesn't, the others will just need to temporarily wait.

I figure we'll "test" for a week or two. When they're available as intended I'll put an announcement banner for everybody.

Bire After Dark will probably pop up in the list of themes at some point very soon too (maybe not this weekend though) but until there's a banner about that it'll exist mostly for me to figuring out what color settings and stuff to use for a darker version of the forum. If you see it and start using it then feel free to give your thoughts but until I put a banner about that you can also just wait until it's "officially" available. Before then if you use it and see something change it may just be me seeing what setting this stylesheet thing to blue will change about how it looks and you happened to catch it before I changed it back from seeing how terrible that was.

I have no idea why the order of the test themes is inverted. Nor why of all the avatars on the site mine is weirdly stretched on some of the themes. lol

I am trying to get likes to show up.

I like test theme 1 the best but "post reply" needs to also be at the bottom and the page numbers also need to be at the top.

And I don't know if automatically going to mu first unread post when clicking on a thread will happen if I stick with it but that's been annoying checking out the themes.

some weird stuff going on with recent changes online...

do we use cloudflare or something? I assume so, by default, like a ton of the web does?

I always tend to use a VPN, and earlier on here imgur pics were coming up dead, and just now so was the whole site, connection refused

I had to disable it just to post this message so benji now has my IP

I heard about some new anti-AI thing cloudflare was rolling out, everyone enrolled by default in anti-scraping countermeasures or something, maybe it's that?

The original intent for the default was mostly to just copy the OG, it was supposed to be better on mobile than that was. I didn't plan on too many upgrades of the design, only the features, because there was supposed to be this massive upgrade with all kinds of new mobile improvements coming. At the time it sounded like this would be sometime in early 2024. Obviously this wasn't the case. Most of the "mobile friendly" themes that existed until recently were like Emerald and just me looking at them on my phone could tell people wouldn't like them. This group seemed to finally actually make things better.

The "default" was not necessarily supposed to always be it, I just didn't want to bother with anything if that update was going to give us a good design automatically. Mobile Test 2 is similar to what that update was/is supposed to be like.

These tests I just added to the site and didn't mess with anything other than a couple simple attempts to get the likes to at least display, I didn't want to start mucking with them if everybody hated them. Since people are overall favorable to at least two I probably will put a little more effort into that just so I know what to do when making them official.

I don't think we use Cloudflare, at least I don't pay for it, the host may have it on their backends or something. There are also other things that kind of do what Cloudflare do. I don't think VPN's should cause any problem, I do not have any of the possible IP blocks and stuff on for either the server or the forum. After simply adding the free CAPTCHA killed off the spam bots I didn't think it was necessary. Even when there's like 200 guests we barely do any traffic, the forum is mostly all text.

I'm not sure off the top of my head what this could be but I haven't really looked into some of the extra crap our host provides, they've added a lot of new AI tools that talk about stuff like marketing and selling which we obviously don't do. If you have issues again I could poke around and see if we have any settings that talk about VPN or scraping. I don't think our database is even 200MB yet so I imagine even scrapers wouldn't use much bandwidth.
