It saddens me when Disney gets credit for "creating/owning" works they adapted (Snow White, Beauty and the Beast etc) from the public domain.

I've mentioned that I love mythology and fantasy a lot of and love to read about fairy tales, especially how these works evolved and changed over time, I love discussing and talking about it with friends and do find them giddy and loves seeing how people adapt them.

Which frustrates and saddens me then when Disney (not anyone who actually worked on the films, just Disney the corporation) constantly gets credit for these stories, many of which existed for centuries and longer before the Disney corporation or Walk Disney himself even existed. In a time where creative rights are horrible and corporations like Disney are gleeful at the idea of getting rid of creatives entirely in favour of AI (aka, art theft; and hopefully fail and burn for it and for supporting Trump and bigots) that we are all to happy to give them sole credit for works solely to them while ignoring the original authors who wrote them.

It annoys me seeing Disney's takes of Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid and many others (Hercules in general seems to be the one work that usually avoids this) gets treated as the sole version or the "definitive" version of the story; the only version that matters and any version before or since it not important. Or worse yet, act like if Disney adapts something, they SHOULD own it, get full copyright of it and own it forever (because it's okay when Disney exploits the public domain for profit but not okay if anyone else does it!) and no one else gets to adapt it; guess Hans Christian Andersen and Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve retroactively didn't write The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Disney did (sadly a weird logic I've seen elsewhere like after major gaming acquisitions, like how Bethesda gets credited for creating Fallout).

(You can ignore this part, this is a side tangent) And I fully realize this is petty on my part but it annoys me when trying to discuss the original literature versions and people keep talking about the Disney version instead; complaining about stuff that's exclusive to the Disney version or get angry at you for getting details about the story "wrong" because they don't match the film. Also side note; I've seen for the past few months both offline and online people declare the reason Disney new take on Snow White failed was because Snow White is "old", "no one cares anymore" and "the original fans died long ago"... a critique I've seen before with other Disney Live action adaptations and it doesn't make any sense to me because by that logic, the original animated movies should have failed as well, many of those source works were centuries old back then as well and the OG fanbase died long ago; hell by that logic ANY adaptation of a work 30+ years old should fail, guess Wicked doesn't exist and Christopher Nolan is fucked with his Odyssey adaptation. (side tangent over)

And to be clear, their is nothing wrong with liking the Disney versions or thinking their the best versions of those stories, but Disney didn't create the original stories nor should have exclusive rights to these public domain works (and yes, their versions and original creation should also go into the Public Domain as well eventually as we're seeing with Mickey).

And remember that Disney, the corporations didn't make these film adaptations, it can't, a corperation isn't a person; people did. The 1991 Beauty and the Beast for example was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, the story was done by a group of people including Brenda Chapman,Chris Sanders,Burny Mattinson, Kevin Harkey, Brian Pimental, Bruce Woodside, Joe Ranft, Tom Ellery, Kelly Asbury, Robert Lence; with the screenplay done by Linda Woolverton. Don't they deserve the credit more the corperation? Same with the voice cast Paige O'Hara and Robby Benson, or the composer Alan Menken etc? Why give sole credit to just the company? Why not acknowledge that these works are made by people adapted from works made by people? That's an issue I think we're all guilty of us, myself very much include, whether its film, TV, games etc.

Something I've noticed over the years, and that I experienced quite directly in my own life, is how people who come from wealth and privilege are often the ones who most loudly appropriate the idea of "struggle." Not the struggle itself, but its aesthetic — the language, the look, the attitude — without ever having to face the real consequences of it. It's a performance that grants them social clout, a way to feel connected to hardship or authenticity, but one that always remains optional because of the safety nets they were born into.

I first realized this years ago when I finished my studies. Suddenly, I had no institutional structure to lean on: no student housing, no scholarships, no stability. I was unemployed for a long period, and I had no family resources waiting in the background to catch me. Everything I did — looking for work, paying rent, figuring out how to stay afloat — was a matter of survival, with little margin for error. I was forced to confront a system that was clearly not designed for someone without money, connections, or a backup plan.

That's when I began to notice the distance between me and some of my friends at the time. They would talk about being "broke" while still living in apartments their parents are renting for them in nice areas of the town, because they wouldn't dare downgrade . They would claim to be navigating precarity, while doing unpaid internships only made possible by family support. They often adopted the posture of hardship as if it were a style, while nepotism and privilege guaranteed them a path forward no matter what. And the effect of this performance wasn't harmless: it flattened and undermined the reality of others' struggles, because they treated their curated version of "struggle" as equivalent to the real thing. Sometimes they even seemed threatened by genuine precarity, because acknowledging it would shatter the authentic picture they wanted to project. It wasn't just that they couldn't relate — it was that they gained social clout from playing at struggle, while quietly erasing or dismissing the weight carried by those who had no choice in living it.

That disconnect was jarring. For me, struggle wasn't an aesthetic or a phase; it was a daily reality with consequences I couldn't escape. For them, it was something that could be picked up or put down depending on the context, a badge of authenticity that could be worn to gain credibility in certain circles while never threatening their future. It forced me to reconsider who around me actually understood what it meant to live without a safety net, and who was simply mimicking the look of struggle because it was socially fashionable.

So I wanted to put this out here and see if others have noticed something similar. Have you experienced that disconnect between people who perform struggle and those who actually live it? How has nepotism and privilege shaped the way you've seen people around you navigate (or avoid) hardship?

The Indigenous American analogy is extremely flawed due to vastly different historical and contemporary contexts.



Indigenous peoples never stopped facing systematic discrimination, violence, and cultural erasure, it's still going on today, making any game about their conquest where their invaders are not shown deeply problematic. While Wuchang isn't even a game specifically about the Qing conquest of Ming. It's an alternate historical fantasy and could easily fit into a time some years before the invasion.



But more importantly, the fall of the Ming presents an inverted dynamic because it's the Manchus who are today a small minority group in China. Maybe make that comparison if we were in an alternate timeline where today's Indigenous Americans were a majority group oppressing the minority White descendants of the European colonists. And then, it would be like comparing it to South Africa and saying what the white population of South Africa today claims about "experiencing racism" is legitimate. I hate these kind of stupid analogies. It's also not like Nazis which is a period within living memory and has continues to affect modern society today.



The developers likely avoided portraying them as antagonists to prevent accusations of inciting ethnic tensions against the minority manchu ethnic group and going against the official ethnic unity narrative - a charge that could have resulted in their game being pulled officially by the government.



By the way, this ethnic unity narrative might sound like a good thing promoting harmony, but note that CCP has used that narrative to also serve as a tool for systematic cultural assimilation and historical revisionism to erase distinct minority identities, especially under "2nd generation ethnic policies."



Things like banning early history books about Mongolian heritage or restricting cultural exhibitions by ethnic Mongolian and Korean minority populations of China that showcase their early histories. Because it goes against projects like the Northeast Project claiming early Korean and Manchurian kingdoms and cultures as Chinese.

In recent years, mandating Mandarin-only education in minority regions (like Inner Mongolia, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture etc.) replacing the previous bilingual education policies of the last 60 years to erase fluency in their ethnic languages.

Ongoing cultural suppression programs with Tibet and Xinjiang which are more well known.

I don't think this type of commentary is good. It seems like Emma and crew view this interview as a net positive because it exposes Tucker's audience to a sympathetic (Christian) voice speaking on the plight of Palestinians. Did we forget Tucker is a white nationalist and anti-semitic? Does this fact matter anymore in light of the genocide? I will view anyone who goes on Tucker's show with a high degree of skepticism (I have never heard of the interviewee) and view all of Tucker's commentary as a net negative, even if it appears to be "positive" on the surface.
