I think both sides are cunts. I liked Hollow Knight but I’m not in love with that game to think this doesn’t look shady after 7 years, but I also don’t give a shit about gaming press entitlement of reviewing games fast as they can because “if not, we are fired”  

If the game is good, great, I will buy it at a discount. If it is shit, I will laugh at the fanboys that were hyping the game for years.

I think part of the problem is boys and young men just... don't really engage with scripted story telling, like, at all. They watch Youtube, TikTok, Twitch Streamers (including all the manosphere garbage) and play multiplayer games with little to no story, and don't read. It's parasocial relationships, short form clips, memes, and ragebait/anti-feminist content. Outside of the occasional trendy anime that's good for memes, they just don't really have an interest in storytelling at a basic level.

I also think this is partially related to boys and young men lurching so far to the right. Scripted story telling is an exercise in empathy. You relate to the characters, put yourselves in their shoes, etc. While obviously not perfect, the cartoons and movies we all grew up with mostly made at least some effort towards representation and showing other points of view.

On top of social media destroying all of our attention spans, boys in particular are just not engaging with any form of media that involves practicing empathy.

Reading Young men not being into the MCU/Star wars/Indie etc. as a sign of lack of empathy while instantly dismissing the story content they do consume seems a bit dramatic to me.

And I'll gladly argue that multiplayer gaming requires more empathy than watching the fantastic 4 at the cinema.

I mean that initial coverage of the game is going to be lower quality, as the outlets that care more about clicks than genuine critique and serving readers will have the resources to rush out shitty reviews and guides, and those that do actually care will be left scrambling to catch up.

I'm going to be honest that I don't really like this sort of an article from Jason. Because at the end of the day it features all the same bullet points you'd see in jason's usual reports (missing deadlines by years, constantly overscoping, perfectionism, you can see these points repeated in all his articles), but spun as a positive here because their specific situation of a 3 person studio with constant cash flow.

Strictly speaking, the game was originally a Kickstarter stretch goal and they still plan to sell the game for money. They also decided to give little to no communication to their fan base.

When a dev making $150,000 a year says he's spending all his time in the office because it's fun, that's going to come across as cynical because we understand the capitalist realities that developer exists under.

When a dev who made north of $10 million (and probably closer to $30 million) just on his share of his first game says essentially the same thing about a game he's making with his 2 friends, we understand that differently because it ... just is a different set of material circumstances.

Ironically, that sounds hyper cynical to me for a different reason.

Favorite part of the movie. It's such an expected part of James Gunn superhero movies for me now, that stylish musical beatdown. Yondu in GotG2, No Sleep Til Brooklyn in GotG3, and then this in Superman. It's the same trick every time, but I'm gonna love it every time because he makes them with such style.

It lowkey reminds me of Deltarune's dev situation, which is similarly - and technically - indie beyond 8-4's assistance with localization. Undertale's success gave Toby Fox a ton of cash that allows him & crew to work on Deltarune with little pressure; the big difference between his team and Team Cherry however, is that dude's made an habit to keep fans consistently updated on whatever progress they do even if it's small.

Where I live, there are panhandlers at every major intersection and shopping areas. Most of these people are in organized rings. Some will bring their entire family out with them, sometimes faking playing violin music piped through a speaker.

Ive had them come up to me inside the grocery store and ask to buy an entire cart of groceries for them. Every single colleague I worked with when I was in the games press who remained in the industry went into marketing/“community management”. It was just seen as the next natural step in the career path — the same job but more money.

The article that led to Rab Florence leaving Eurogamer was about how close the media and marketing people were. This was shortly before they all started creating ethics policies because people started to ask questions about all the freebies and extravagant review trips.
