I play games far less than I used to in my youth, and what time I do spend now is limited to focus on other things in life. Every round of Overwatch after like the fifth one is spent going "You could be making art right now." I don't mind the guilty voice winning out.

I will also say that I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, both out of a lack of investment in the hobby and also general embarrassment and moral reservations with the culture.

This guy on Grindr just moved here from Princeton for a summer internship in Big Tech. He's a 21 year old software engineering student that is from Rwanda. He didn't seem Ivy League smug or anything so I've been chatting with him on Grindr and he became obsessed with messaging me throughout this week, checking in on me "how's your day", "what are you up to", "can we hang out this weekend" etc

So then he asks me what I'm doing on Friday and I tell him I'm watching Ghibli movies, ie Princess Mononoke. He asks me what that is and I have to explain to him that they're famous animated movies often done by Hayao Miyazaki. He asks for an example and I'm like I told you, Princess Mononoke. He then says "oh…like anime movies?" To which I confirm yes. Then he tells me "Oh well this conversation wasn't bad so far, but now I've got to be an adult lol"

Lol excuse me? I was so taken aback. Do people in 2022 really still look down on others for liking "anime movies" let alone fucking award winning Miyazaki movies? The nerve of this kid condescending me. Like you're not impressive Mr Princeton. Everyone in this city is a software engineer at big tech and to come after me at 21 years old when I'm a rising 4th year phd student in computational biology and tell me you can't enjoy "anime movies" because you have to be an adult. It's one of those aspect of media that I always feel is very unfair, that comedy writers often get less respected, less accolades or treated less seriously as writers because of their genre of choice; same with comedy actors who feel the need to perform in serious films to be considered a real/serious/good actors in the eyes of their peers/press/audiences. That being in a comedy is lesser to being in drama.

And to me, in some ways that should be the other way round because comedy is WAY harder to write then drama. This was something I really began to appreciate when I was in University doing a Film and TV BA and MA (and reappreciating again writing my novel), something funny in your head can fall flat when typed out on a script, or is funny on script but then fails when acted out for one reason or another. Comedy is far more subjective then tragedy in my experience, it's way easier to make a crowd cry then it is to make them all laugh. Comedy writers deserve more respect.

That is not to say writing drama is easy either, you can easily fall into a trap of being over dramatic or it falls into being unintentionally funny territory; just in my mind, comedy is much harder to pull off well, especially to a wide audience because I feel their are so many more factors that can make a joke fail; including the fact that a lot of comedy can become easily dated due to references becoming forgotten to new audiences, sarcasm missed, overuse of a joke (either by the work or the fandom) or people forgetting a work was intended to be a joke in the first place for very old works.

So, I just started Persona 5 (yeah, I'm late to the game) because I was craving some old school turn based rpg and pretty much every review gives the game praise. I never played a Persona or Shin Megami Tensei game before, so it's all new to me. The gameplay is pretty fine and I'm enjoying, the art is gorgeous and the story...well, I'm just in the beginning, trying to take down the first palace, but I understand some of the delicate themes (it would be better if the characters were in an University, but it's Japan, I guess.) and I can endure some of the anime tropes. But damn...poor Ann. I like her character and I can empathize with her struggle. Once we're inside the palace though...the game does her very dirty. I can take the catsuit, sure, especially since her body isn't over exaggerated and the themes of her Persona, but why does her fighting stance needs her to be bending forward while propping her ass up, with the camera right behind her as I choose her actions (I can understand the Black Cat and Catwoman inspirations, two overly sexualized characters, but not even them appear like that in a game. And they're both adults)? And when she's dizzy it's even worse...everyone crouches or looks dizzy, while Ann lays with her upper body down on the ground and her ass up. And considering she's supposed to be...what, 16 or so? Not gonna lie, it makes me roll my eyes hard. The other playable female characters receive the same treatment? At least so I can prepare myself for more eye rolling.

When I say copy, I mean mechanically the tank controls as well as stun and melee combinations. It's one of the most popular and influential games. Surely there's an audience for this. I think this concept could even work in other formats like isometric.

I respect Wired as a publication too, but they are absolutely getting flamed over this. As of last night they've had to correct the article no less than three times. So whatever vetting they did before they hit 'Publish', clearly it wasn't enough.

But also, I think it goes a bit deeper than parasocial cringe fest when even creators who aren't associated with Chorus (and in some cases don't even fuck with the Democrats) are being harassed. That's not cool. That should be called out. Hell, one of the creators (AB, whose video I linked to in this thread), was being harassed despite having never worked with Chorus, and in fact she even posted receipts of her turning them down because they only wanted to offer her $250 a month. 8k where? There's so much to the framing of this article that is misleading to the point of being malicious, especially when its resulting in people being harassed.

And also, just thinking more broadly...this whole thing is reminding me of that rant I went on in here a few weeks ago about narratives. When shit like this happens, who is really being served? Is the truth being served? Absolutely not, because the way that article has been so thoroughly debunked by this point it's clear Lorenz (nor Wired) cared much about the truth. Did this help the left? Any part of the left? No. It helped Lorenz. I'm sure the right is loving this. I'm going to guess Wired is probably second guessing their decision to publish this.
