The Saudi Arabian state is most likely losing money on this because their royal family has a bunch of capital-G Gamers, you've been supporting them for longer and to a greater extent by using electricity and gasoline.

It's to smooth out the gains rather than be tied entirely to the price of oil. The tiny shares of legitimate businesses they're buying are far more important to the wealth fund than the personal trinkets of sports teams and fighting game tournaments that will probably just lose money.
