On insular extremist communities, it's also why radicalisation pipelines for these groups need to be better assessed, understood and acknowledged by those in positions to educate and spread awareness - from the home up. Once people go over that event horizon the spiral of awe into adoration into aspiration becomes a constant competition of trying to be more extreme than those that came before, or currently have recognition within that community. The problem is these pitfalls are everywhere online and have been honed over years and via algorithms to identify and exploit an increasing number of insecurities.

Not to say that I think your analysis of "violence and harm for the sake of violence and harm" is wrong, I agree. But as with any gang, when I look into these groups people brought up today, I see a real thirst for male peer validation.

 I think it's less about that and more about finding a place in society by sort of cribbing the, I can't think of another word but, legacy of dudes like the Unabomber and the Zodiac. And with each one that does something like this, they rile each other up and get each other going. It's a bit like the whole thing with streamers and youtubers, where the fanbases will raid or feud with other fanbases. Only instead of raiding another streamer's chat or the comments section of a video they go and hurt people.

I'm not pretending to be an expert or anything, I just know enough to spot this sort of shit if anyone wanders in and tries to set up shop, but others will know more.

 

 This makes me think of Hody Jones from One Piece, too.

There was a period of time when YT was doing their best to convince me about how much I hated women for ruining Star Wars. I took up a policy of telling them that I never wanted to see any content from chud-channel-X in my recommendations any time I saw anything remotely wack (culture war bullshit or just lame-ass flavor of the week thumbnails). Things are a lot better now and I don't think I've missed out on anything worth while.
