Alright, I'm going to approach this delicately, but I have to point out that the origins of the term "fish" is not drag. That is Black trans culture. It IS problematic and because of that I hear it less often these days, and with all things I blame Drag Race, but the origin of that term is a little more complicated.

I'm pushing 40, but I moved to Philly when I was a blushing 21 year-old. And the person who first took me in, my family and the person I still refer to as "mom" is a Black trans woman. That's the community I came up in. And so just relating from my experience, anecdotally, before I ever heard drag queens using the term "fish" I heard it among my Black trans friends.

But this is typical. Drag isn't a "people" exactly; it's an art form. And, outside of RuPaul, a lot of the most prominent drag queens are trans women. So it stands to reason that a lot of drag culture and drag lingo has its origins in trans culture and lingo (and lets just keep it a buck: Black trans culture and lingo).

All this to say…Loomer is using the term incorrectly, this is ChatGPT as fuck. "fish" as a term is used as a compliment on your ability to "pass" (which in itself is a whole can of worms). It's not something that gets used very often because of it's problematic nature, particularly among younger people.

I only called it a "can of worms" because ideally, morally, ethically, your identity as a trans person, a nonbinary person, a genderqueer/genderfuck/gender non-conforming person, should not and does not hinge on whatever society deems is the appropriate "aesthetic" for cis womanhood/manhood in any given period. Your identity is not your ability to "pass."

But for certain groups it can be more complicated than that. For some groups, passing can be a matter of survival, and not just aesthetic. And that shouldn't be the case.

I will say, that for the trans women I grew up around, passing was hugely important to them. But a large part of that was because they are Black. It's hard existing in this world as a Black person. Harder still as a Black queer person. Harder yet as a Black trans person. A Black trans woman!? These were survival techniques being passed down. And that shouldn't be.
