This is honestly madness as American. I don't know at what point we become a dictatorship or if that point is long passed. It's like trying to watch your kids or pets grow when you are with them every day. You don't notice them grow daily, but after a number of months or years, you wonder how they grew so much, and you barely noticed it. You're locked into daily life and can't step outside of your perspective.



It's the same with Trump. I can't believe how FAST everything is happening. Even if you realize it's over a decade since Trump got elected, I would have never thought when Obama was president and things were relatively calm, that America would soon become a dictatorship or very close to one. Moreover, I never would have thought that Trump would be the guy to pull if off. He was a joke and tabloid fodder for most of my life. I didn't take him seriously either even with his Apprentice comeback. And I thought he was done for good after 2020 and January 6th, but here we are. He's stronger and more evil than ever.

I remember the last time I went on a lap bar only coaster, my ass lifted up off the seat and I went "this is how I die" in my head. I'm pretty slim and pretty light, so most lap-bars KIND OF hold me but not very well. Depending on the force of the coaster I could've slipped right out of the seat and died right there on the spot. That moment convinced me that I will ONLY ride a ride with a full shoulder harness.

I'm less concerned about being bumped around (although that IS a problem sometimes, I left my last wooden coaster with bruises all over my arms and hips from being slid back and forth inside the car) and more about being sucked out of the seat into the air. That's always my main fear for anything where I'm not locked in place.

I used to research theme park accidents when I was younger to try and de-phobia myself so my friends wouldn't make fun of me for not wanting to go on thrill rides, but I had the misfortune of going to college where Cedar Point was our closest park and fuck going on Cedar Point's big rides, lol.

Nexstar pulled Kimmel from it's ABC stations. Disney fired Kimmel because the show would no longer be seen by a huge number of ABC viewers. It would be far more effective to cancel your cable TV subscription where the vast majority of local stations are owned by conservative owners Nexstar and Sinclair, than to cancel Disney+.

The problem I keep seeing is how people try to apply the logic of American capitalism to China and the way they are acting. At one point they were much much more beholden to such things because they didn't effectively have as much leverage as they needed. But now they aren't a soft power. I used to apply the same kind of thought process of like "oh that doesn't sound profitable, that doesn't make sense, they'll collapse" or something like that. I think it's kind of a failure of understanding like others have pointed out that effectively they're just central planning/doing as a state what a lot of companies like Amazon etc do. If they decide they want to build all the housing, all the cars etc, and have internal resources to make it happen, even most likely at the expense of companies in their systems etc. They can in fact do so. I'm not saying this is a positive thing or negative I just find it kind of fascinating, but it's important I think to recognize.

The something applies to other anachronistic views that we hold on their manufacturing and cities etc. Due largely to western media portrayals and bias etc. I mean most people I know still think they operate like grungy conveyor line manufacturing in a dark building out of the late 19th century for some reason.

I mean....Obama intervened in Libya without congress for longer than the 60-day War Powers resolution limit.  He assassinated an American citizen without judicial process because he was related to a terrorist, and killed a few other Americans with drone strikes, and never faced accountability for it.  He oversaw the NSA bulk data collection program on citizens and tried to expand DACA and DAPA with executive actions to take control of deportation deferrals....all that sounds kinda dictatorial, but yeah, not as exciting as a talk show host getting fired.

But this is misinformation. The Supreme Court rejects Trump constantly, especially on most things he wants. The 2020 election, his NYC sentencing, freezing foreign aid, etc. The infamous "king" case didn't grant the President any powers nor did it depart from long held law. Sotomayor's list of horribles were all not powers of the President.

Obama assassinated two American citizens, one of them a minor, without trial. Obama tried to make it legal for the federal government to ban books, especially if they were critical of politicians during elections, something the Supreme Court continues to be condemned for rejecting. Two administrations tried to illegally wiretap every American citizen (and the rest of the world), countless officials lied to Congress about this. The Clinton-W. Bush-Obama era eviscerated the last restraints on the Presidential use of force abroad. None of Era nor anyone who wrings their hands about Trump (like Sotomayor) has ever seemed to care about any of this. That was all just "part of the plan" apparently.

So forgive me if I find all the chicken littling over literally anything that happens to be wholly and forever mockworthy. I just see the chickens coming home to roost to use the phrase of a great intellectual mind.

Revoking licenses that do or don’t exist isn’t trumps only lever to pull to get what he wants.  I’m sure Disney/ABC are far more familiar with potential threats to their business than any of us would be.  If they are this quick to react to something fairly benign, Kimmel didn’t even say the shooter was maga, just that maga was wishcasting this guy to be anyone but one of them, which to be fair so was the left.  If trump wasnt president I can almost guarantee Kimmel would still be on air and that’s where the problem lies.  Companies are bending over backwards to make sure they don’t offend his fragile ego and invoke his wrath.  And that’s not how anyone should be reacting to the president of the United States.  That’s how you react to a despot or a dictator.

Except two of the largest affiliate networks, presumably with silent support from others, pulled Kimmel. That's the threat, that's the action, this has happened before Trump numerous times. I can't tell you if the affiliates saw Carr's threat and decided they needed to act against Kimmel, I'm skeptical because these affiliates (especially Sinclair) are already pro-Trump or at least pro-Republican. They're also anti-FCC and they want the FCC defanged. ABC doesn't care about the FCC, it doesn't have authority over them and they're competing with their affiliates now through Disney+.

Id honestly trust benjis judgement over the legality and possibility of something government related over trump, but again, trump is absolutely threatening people and companies first amendment protections to further his own goals.  It’s silly to pretend it’s not happening.

I don't want to seem like I'm poo-pooing that Trump will threaten anyone, I feel like everyone knows my free speech radicalism and so wouldn't believe I would trust or defend Trump when I myself have been telling people he's never supported free speech and been frivolously suing and hating on the First Amendment since the 1980's. Trump himself as President and candidate has regularly threatened to take away broadcast licenses of entities that don't have them, which is one of the sources of MAGA Twitter constantly demanding this of entities that don't have them or inventing FCC rules that don't exist to enforce against them. Trump's beliefs about how defamation works is similarly more wrong than ever correct. He threatens this stuff nearly daily and people forget almost all of it. Even MAGA has forgotten that Fox News was the enemy.

My caution on this, or any topic where I may seem like I'm defending Trump, is that there are often multiple causes to things and not always the most overt. We know people are doxing and threatening all kinds of people over Kirk. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to believe these same people are flooding red state affiliates who then turn around and threaten the network by pulling Kimmel and the network suspends him to get the affiliates off their back. Meanwhile Trump and Carr (and random MAGA women on Twitter) claim they (or their husband) did this because this is how they think things work, you yell something and the world bends. This is one of my constant themes on here against Era and similar in general, that their frustration at the world is that it doesn't work this way. One of the benefits of power, real power, is knowing when you don't have to listen. Bob Iger, who himself believed he needed to run for President in 2016, surely knows he doesn't have to listen to most any of this except the affiliates.

I similarly are incredibly skeptical about all these claims that companies are bending over to Trump, especially media companies, given the examples we're constantly handed. Frankly, if Trump would rather spend his time browbeating media CEOs for whatever he's just seen on Fox News that angers him, I'm happy to go with that versus his use of actual state power that others like Bondi take their cues from. Trump getting distracted by the media (Gorilla Channel or otherwise) was a godsend in his first term and basically brought the place to a standstill. In retrospect this wasn't great when a once in a century pandemic occurred, but you have to take risks in life.

I also caution because these are the same people warning us who also warned us that Zaslav would never again have any productions starring women or minorities. Now he's turning around and giving his empire over to a Democrat. "Ellison bent the knee over the lawsuit" or he pushed for a settlement because it was good business because companies prefer settling because it's good business over an open-ended money sink that could go very bad. Did NewsCorp bend the knee to Biden when they settled the most important lawsuit in the history of journalism (source: B-Dubs) or was it the prudent way to minimize the losses? Ellison going to UFC with Trump was obviously him making friends with the President of the United States but that's what happens I don't know why this is all of the sudden this grand threat to all of us. CEOs have marched to the White House to "advise" the President for all of our lives. They couldn't race there fast enough to get pictured with Obama during the hype years. MAGA and the rest may think that's why they shoved DEI into everything but I absolutely do not believe that to be the case.

Anyway, all this is just me defending the powerful by denying that everything is simple and can just be solved by allies arming up and fighting back. And I admit, to an extent that's true.
