Having been subjected to Rush Limbaugh more times than I'd care to admit, reading Hasan brought back some unpleasant memories with the parallels.

This entire Kimmel situation is dumb. He almost certainly broke FCC rules by knowingly reporting misinformation, but looking at Colbert, I highly doubt he was making ABC any money to begin with, either. And so, when two of the largest broadcast networks told ABC that they would no longer air the show, meaning it would lose even more money, what was Disney supposed to do? Keep producing a controversial, expensive format nobody cared about anymore to begin with, now with less than half the potential reach? Of course they were going to shitcan it.

At least the shooter will be getting the death penalty for making a YouTuber the center of conversation for over a week now.

I don't believe this because the rule is about misinformation in a crisis like telling people there's no tornado as it's destroying the town. And I'm certain they believed it was true.

I would love to see evidence that the FCC has ever enforced a claim against a television network for reporting misinformation because I'm still not convinced there was ever a legitimate threat here. Trump is a liar and so is every Trumper so they just claim stuff no matter how untrue it is. I'm not convinced they had anything to do with this decision because of that.

The justice system moves so slowly that by the time of his execution, Charlie Kirk will have been long forgotten.

The rules are kinda vague, but I'd argue misattributing a politically motivated assassination causes damage by poisoning the civil and political discourse, especially considering a lot of people apparently fell for it. And if Kimmel or his writing room actually still believed the groyper rumor at that point in time, they did a piss poor job researching their headline topic and should at least issue an retraction and apology, but Kimmel doubled down instead. That might not be enough to warrant a FCC investigation, but seems perfectly sufficient to cancel a show nobody watches.

Is it tho?

The US Talk show opening monologue is pretty fucking well defined in both structure, format, and tone at this point.
I don't think anyone could convincingly claim that they mistook it for reportage and not - as it has been for what, 50+ years now? - topical jokes

And to be fair, Kimmel also left himself enough wiggle room by not outright stating that the thinks the shooter is a right wing fanatic

Quote:“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

IMO the implication that he thinks the shooter is MAGA is very strong but he doesn't outright say it.

Kimmel himself now says his statement was mischaracterized, and I guess you can choose to believe him or not, but if he really didn't mean it I'd argue the writers did a shit job by writing such an ambiguous line.

My controversial take is if the ratings were strong, he wasn’t overpaid, or whatever, they wouldn’t have moved as quickly as they did. It’s been long reported how in the dumps these late night shows were. When the conversations around Colbert were happening, it came out how his viewership were all over 60.

I was going to make a bad joke about airing syndicated episodes of Matlock is more cost effective… but they rebooted Matlock last year with Kathy Bates??? What is happening.

Regarding the bolded: it certainly doesn't help when all of these shows put all of the most interesting clips on youtube day 0. I've never understood that practice.

I want to have to tune in LIVE to see Jimmy Kimmel repeat falsehoods about political assassins!

Chud source warning.

Quote:WASHINGTON—The man who attempted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh identifies as a transgender woman and was deeply mentally ill and suicidal, according to court documents first obtained by The Daily Wire.
Quote:A filing from Roske’s defense attorneys shows that Roske now goes by “Sophie Roske” and that his legal team will refer to him using female pronouns. A footnote on the filing, obtained exclusively by The Daily Wire, explains that the defense will not use Roske’s legal name “out of respect” for the would-be assassin.

“The case is captioned as United States v. Nicholas John Roske,” lawyers for Roske state. “That name remains Ms. Roske’s legal name, and she has not asked to recaption the case. Out of respect for Ms. Roske, the balance of this pleading and counsel’s in-court argument will refer to her as Sophie and use female pronouns
