NotLiquid wrote:"Incredible energy" is, hm. I think Sonic Team are finding a return to focus but I don't think it's a return to form.

Sonic Frontiers was just kind of mediocre. As much as fans swear by it, it's the kind of game where you can tell the developers were really trying to overshoot on its premise despite the fact that they clearly were not equipped with the resources and know-how to pull off a "Breath of the Wild moment" for the series. Design-wise the game is held together with duct tape, with janky physics, image detail, controls, and combat. The series' art direction took a bit of a dip in this era, with the open worlds looking like something straight out of the UE fan remake playbook (even though I think Shadow Gens improved it somewhat). I feel like the main reason fans still swear that this game was better than what critics back then rated it is that, for one, there's a base novelty in running around in a huge environment as Sonic; two, there's a much greater interest in lore and story that takes itself seriously, even if that means putting up with self referential Ian Flynn dialogue and the most deathly serious dub this series has had; and three, it has more of those big epic set piece moments that kind of suck in game play but makes for the kind of hype drivers that people who still obsess over the Sonic Adventure 2 final boss can show off with pride. Like overall this was a game where for the first time since Sonic Unleashed, you could tell fans desperately wanted this game to be seen as good, and for it's worth they probably succeeded in that since it's the best selling Sonic game in some time.

Then Sonic Superstars happened and well, we kind of agreed to pretend it didn't. It's mostly Arzest but I think if we're counting CrossWorlds as a Sonic Team joint, then we have to acknowledge this one.

Shadow Generations was good but I also don't know if I'd call it more than that. It's the most polished version of the boost formula -- one which I have mixed feelings about in general -- but it's still the type of game where so much of what it achieves is on the back of relentless remixing. Sonic Frontiers sort of had that problem as well where the Cyberspace segments were the game's most polished offerings and it only really achieved that by giving us a lot of stuff we've already played. I still remember how frustrated a lot of the community were that we'd be going through Green Hill and Sky Sanctuary again during those days. In this case at least we're offered an excellent remix with maybe one of the better stories this series has given us, but much like the game it's building off of, it ends too soon for me to feel like the experience is more than a pretty fleeting one.

And as for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, well, it's fun. It feels mainly noteworthy on account of more circumstantial elements because as a package I still think it's pretty flawed. The best and most noteworthy thing I can say about Shadow Generations and CrossWorlds is that they both work, and I don't mean that in the sense that they're not janky or whatever (CrossWorlds has a lot of it), it's that their designs don't really have any glaring holes or questionable elements about them. They remind me of Sonic Colors where you could generally tell from the game's trailers alone that there probably wasn't going to be a twist of fate in quality, and that the games are pretty much as fun as they look.

To me I think the "energy" of Sonic Team right now, and why I call it a return to focus instead of a return to form, is because I mostly think Sega just got better at marketing. They generally stay in their lane and give fans the type of stuff they know that they'll respond well to, such as making the side cast more prominent, or trying to give us another Genesis physics-accurate 2D Sonic game, even if it isn't that good. You have all these promotional trailers and tie-in mini-series for games like Shadow Generations and CrossWorlds which look more exciting than the games themselves, and that bleeds into the perception that fans have of their games. You have moments like the Super Sonic battles and vocal themes in Frontiers, which presentationally do so much heavy lifting for how the games are perceived. You have the IDW comics which are generally really well liked, and the live action movies improved so much of the brand perception with how they both respected their franchise while also being decent successful movies. They also go so much harder on cross-promotional branding and marketing stunts than they used to, which feels evocative of the "glory days" of when Sonic used to be everywhere. Even that throwback CrossWorlds commercial from a few weeks ago poking fun at Nintendo is the type of thing that galvanizes fans, no matter how much some people will say it's just in good fun. And speaking as someone who used to be a diehard Sonic fan in the trenches during the Unleashed era, no one does a better job at gassing up their guy than Sonic fans. You give them an inch and we'll run it into the planet core, sometimes to our own detriment, lest we forget the infamous TGA Players' Voice vote the year when Frontiers released.

Me personally I think I'll feel this "incredible energy" when I see how much their next game can kick things up in terms of having polish, solid artistic direction, and doing so without relying on old stuff. As of now I think Sega has successfully made me think more about Sonic the Hedgehog, but they haven't made me particularly excited about it; at least not excited enough for me to be pumped to play their games.

The Initial D arcade team is LITERALLY a part of Sega and simply got integrated into console game development. They're as much of Sonic Team as any other employee.  omfg

Haven't played it yet because the Switch 2 version is delayed but it looks like a fantastic sequel to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Overall most upcoming games now fit into the "sequel to game that was popular 10 - 20 years ago and lets ignore all the weird shit that happened with this series in between"

From Crossworlds, Ninja Gaiden 4 and Metroid Prime 4 to Battlefield 6.

Now look what you've done:
https://restofworld.org/2025/brazil-ai-courts-lawsuits/ wrote:Brazil’s judicial system — among the most litigious in the world — is turning to artificial intelligence for help.

Judges are using AI to clear their dockets at a faster clip than ever before, even as lawyers refill them rapidly, also with the help of AI. It’s a “vicious circle,” Rodrigo Badaró, a councilor monitoring AI use at the National Council of Justice, a constitutional body overseeing the judiciary, told Rest of World.
Quote:To cope, Brazil has embarked on one of the world’s largest deployments of AI. Since 2019, its courts have developed or implemented over 140 AI projects that use machine learning or large language models, according to a 2024 survey by the National Council of Justice. The programs find precedents, categorize cases, and help draft documents. Some also forecast the decisions of judges and flag repeat litigants.

Some of the AI tools have helped the courts become more efficient, process documents faster, and cut down the time taken for judicial proceedings, according to the survey.

At the Supreme Court, law clerk Arianne Vasconcelos smiled as she explained how AI helps her deliver better reports to the judges.

The 42-year-old works in a department that handles lawsuits about potential constitutional violations. Typically, her department gets around 76 new cases every month, according to Supreme Court data. Her job is to analyze the argument and create a summary. She also drafts decisions for Luís Roberto Barroso, the current chief justice, to review.

Last December, Vasconcelos got a new helper: MarIA, a generative-AI based tool that helps her write reports. Earlier, she used to write one-pagers and move to the next case on her ever-growing pile, she said.

Now, MarIA drafts the reports, which Vasconcelos reviews.

“Using MarIA, you can now make a much more extensive and complete [report],” she told Rest of World. “It’s easier to adjust [what the AI produced] than start from scratch.”

The MarIA tool was developed by STF’s tech team, and uses Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT models, said Natacha Oliveira, the team coordinator.

“AI is providing high quality work,” she told Rest of World. “If anything stops working, clerks immediately complain. ”AI tools have helped reduce the backlog at the Supreme Court, Oliveira said.

By June, the backlog dropped to the lowest level since 1992, according to a productivity report from the Supreme Court. Nationwide, judges at various levels of the judiciary closed 75% more cases last year than they did in 2020, data from the National Council of Justice shows.
Quote:AI’s helping hand extends to lawyers: More than half of Brazil’s attorneys use generative AI daily, according to a 2025 poll by the country’s Bar Association. They filed over 39 million new lawsuits last year — a 46% jump since 2020, data from the National Council of Justice shows.

Drafting a defense used to take 20 minutes. Now it can be done in seconds, Daniel Marques, president of Brazilian law-tech association AB2L, told Rest of World.

“For a lawyer who bills by the hour, that’s a big efficiency gain,” he said. “But he can’t be lazy. This will be done much faster, but it needs to be reviewed.”

The legal profession is rooted in language, rules, and logic — the very same elements generative AI is good at, according to a report by venture capital firm Contrary Capital. That makes the profession a natural target for AI companies. A Goldman Sachs report estimates 44% of legal tasks could potentially be automated in the future.

That ex Gametrailers/EasyAllies guy mentioned this after last Nintendo Direct, but is funny that they are making a film from the Mario game were the director stealthily added some semblance of plot, behind Miyamoto’s back.

Mario has 40 years of history and almost no plot outside RPGs. Honestly, what would be the plot of Super Mario World the movie? Bowser threatens a bunch of Yoshis with the help of his offspring some midgets relatives of his.

But I cant hate Miyamoto, as he give us the best Mario gag in the film: Mario hates mushrooms.  Miyamoto

gee, your Mario games have no plot? you've got nothing to do other than your origin story, everything else is also just "Peach is in trouble again?"

sure is lucky that someone secretly added plot to one of your games behind your back, so you've got actual (barebones) content for a sequel!

every RPG has been good when Nintendo didn't give a fuck and said "yeah you're a minor spinoff, we don't care what you do," and they fucking suck whenever miyamoto takes an interest and wrests control
