I know there's cheaper alternatives to playing retro games, but I like the idea of owning legit copies of things (I know, whatever).
They keep popping up on my feeds and seem like a bit of fun.
Have read good things, but haven't tried any of their products. Too limited compared to what you can do with the various Android/Linux handhelds.
I figured that was the case. I just don't fancy fucking around with emulators and losing games and stuff. I also like collecting random shit I don't need.
It's definitely something I'm keeping an eye on.

if its the 'legitmate' side of things you're worried about, this might be useful:

if you feel like a maker project, you can build yourself a fight stick / arcade stick out of a raspberry pi, which will comfortably run a shit ton of arcade classics with a nice front end and be basically plug and play.

Nerds have made front-ends that are hassle free and often better than official products. I think some of the Android options have a small fee associated, but windows and linux options are free and drag and drop.
The... can't pretend to know what brand or model number it is. Some cheap thing modeled after the Sega Genesis and Saturn controllers. Runs any 2D system plus PS1 with enough battery that it's never been on my mind that it'll die. I can chuck it at somebody like a batarang and it won't break. It might have TV out but I never tested it.

There's more than one front end on Android but perhaps the most popular, es-de, requires a one time fee via Patreon. It's pretty cheap and worth it.

Sounds like it could be the Anbernic Arc-D. It's kinda old now but it really depends on what console generations you want to play. An updated version of this is the Retroid Pocket Classic, which is a vertical handheld that has two colorways available with six face buttons. No TV out though.
I've been using the RG477M lately. It's a powerhouse but getting the Odin 3 when it releases and it will be better. But I really like the display on the 477M. It's a large 4.7" 120hz screen. It's also on two other cheaper/less powerful devices that they sell (RG Slide and RG 476H).
A lot of folks will recommend the Retroid Pocket 5 or Flip 2. Don't get these- especially the Flip 2 since it has issues with the hinge breaking. They're not bad devices (quite awesome in fact!) but there's two new handhelds from Ayaneo (under their new KONKR brand) and the AYN Odin 3 coming soon that will be better. Plus Retroid should unveil something new pretty soon too.
And if you just want something on the cheap to play 8-bit, 16-bit, and PS1 (with some N64/PSP/DC but don't get them for this), Trimui's Smart Pro and Brick are still the best budget devices IMO. The Brick just got an all-metal version called the Brick Hammer recently. Nothing different about it, but it's really slick and premium feeling.

It's pretty easy getting emulation set up these days. The only tedious thing is getting a rom collection going but even that's fairly easy. Google "roms megathread.". You'll also want BIOS files. Archive.org has that stuff plus roms too.
On Android devices for example, I can get everything set up in like 10 minutes or less-
1. Pop in your sd card with roms
2. Download Retroarch (from their site!)
3. Install all the cores in Retroarch and close it
4. Install a front end and let it do the rest
That's it. You may also want a few standalone emulators too but those are also easy to get and set up.

I think this is right but I'm not going to look it up right now to confirm.
I'm currently playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and I gotta say, there is a disturbing lack of African Americans in this game...
Pre-ordered one of them Lost in Cult books because they had one on Grasshopper Manufacture. Seeing a lot bitching online about them taking ages to get the books to you.
Got an e-mail a few days back that the Q2/3 2025 release date has been moved to Q1 2026.
If they ever deliver this shit, I'll tell you if they're worth buying.

Battlefield 6 is pretty good so far.
They really circled all the way back to a Battlefield 4 sequel which is not a bad thing.

What releases first: GTA6 or PS6? (Rip xbox2x)

Had a chat about this the other day. We concluded that PS6 is probably closer than people think (especially if Xbox is dead).
I'm thinking GTA6 next year on PS5 and then a year later the version that actually runs on PS6. I think holiday '26 is a bit early but I can see PS6 hitting like May 2027 or some such.

Glad to see this game back from the dead. Unfortunately i have sold my PS3.
Wish one day that Mario Kart Maker or something similar exists, but i guess we'll have to make do with Mario Kart Wii custom tracks.

The souped up $999 barely beats the $450 Switch 2 at times the IQ is worse
It's kind of insane how efficient and well crafted the Switch 2 is and how much better DLSS is over FSR.
The thumbnail is the restart, 18s on Switch 2, 1 minute on ROG Xbox Ally X
8nm Samsung node + Nvidia engineering goes toe to toe with the AMD Ryzen™ Z1 Extreme processor on 4nm.
Sure the Switch 2 battery runs out quicker but it's 4x smaller.
Xbox as a skin for Windows. Excel on your Xbox. This is truely what the original Xbox team warned Microsoft about.
Seeing plenty of people pretty pissed that while it doesn't have as high a framerate, Cyberpunk 2077 looks better on Switch 2 than it does on Xboy.
And the 599 model? Well the Switch 2 blows that thing straight out of the water. It's not even a competition.
Most YouTube guys are now waking up for the fact that Switch 2 is pretty much a Series S and the average consumer can hardly tell the difference.
Nintendo is going to absolutely dominate the holiday season. It's still the cheapest overall even though it's more expensive than before and you can play all your Switch games on it and improve some with cheap upgrades.

Im surprisingly broken up by Itagaki's death. Good or bad, cult of personality folks like that dont exist anymore in videogames, unless you count the Last of Us guy.
The dude he was beefing with being sad made me feel even worse.
Now we got foos that are all about making games accessible. Fuck that. I want games to fuck me up.
Edit- been playing through the ninja gaiden games recently. They dont make em like that anymore.

Unless I missed something, that video appears to be running the Xbox Ally X on battery power and doesn't list the wattage, nor does it show how much vram has been allocated. DLSS on Switch 2 is impressive but there's no way it's touching the Ally at 30w/8gb vram from a performance standpoint. Edit: the performance section has some of the settings listed but still doesn't note what the vram is. I don't know what the Ally X settings are stock but some of these devices ship with it set too low.
For the record I wouldn't buy an Xbox Ally X and would tell someone to get a Switch 2 or Steam Deck OLED- we should be getting significantly more powerful apus in these handhelds within the next year or two. The GPD Win 5 is going to use Strix Halo which will shit all over everything else, but it's also going to cost a lot more and GPD's QC and customer service are awful. OneX are also putting out a handheld with the same level of power, but they suck too.
If there was any chance that game played even remotely that well, I'd buy it in a flash.
Still waiting for Low Budget Repair
Tried DMCV the past few weeks while waiting. Its terribly boring. Got NG4 downloaded and went through the tutorial. Its alright so far. The blood effects are cool tho.
After seeing how subtle Silent Hill F is. Guys, imagine this. A new Silent Hill game dealing with a main character with breast cancer.
I'll call it Silent Hill: Shattered Mammaries.
This one's even worse:
And some other guy is posting his own dreck in the replies:
I honestly can't tell if these dudes really think they're generating games because they're making short video clips:
anyone have a guide for modding a wiiU?
