Hey there

I used to post in GAF waaaay back in the day and got curious about how The Bore was doing. Sorta-catching-up these last few days has been wild, better than a soap opera. Also, sometimes, legit infuriating.  

I swear this just needs another JK Rowling-fueled shooting to be worthy of a Tiger King-style documentary. Something that reported the descent into madness of GAF to the absolute insanity of ResetEra. "Hookup knife" should be a widespread meme.

Just dropping by to say it's been extremely entertaining to read you all. And, just to drop my two cents, I think ResetEra has really encapsulated the absolute shitshow that social media in general has been in the last few years. The ridiculous witch hunts, the depressing self-pitying, the race to be the most oppressed, the continuous seethe, hatred, racism and misogyny from the holier-than-thou paragons of virtue. For all the talks about being more welcoming-to-women, I remember the community used to be far friendlier and fun than the worthless pit of patronizing delusion it has become now.

Keep up the good work, really looking forward to the new season with its new suicide-note-baiting main character.

Also, I noticed a lot of people in that Deep Rock Galactic thread were spreading the transphobic myth that men and women have different body types and skeletal structures that require different rigging and animations. Yet with ClickyCal' currently banned there's nobody to call out these "allies" for posting the exact kind of exterminationist rhetoric that Joanne does.

And then people wonder why all the trans people have left in droves, are holding (hookup or otherwise) knives to their throat because of abuse from the admins and the forum is well know as a far-right hive.

I’ve seen people go on weird tangents about how Control’s Jesse or Returnal’s astronaut lady are homely. Something about Aloy getting fat in Horizon 2? But haven’t seen ranting to play as a 6ish man instead. They didn’t even complain about Aloy before she packed on a few.

I gotta say I've always thought it's weird that the player character is female in satisfactory (specifically that they don't justify it with lore)



you're a nameless, faceless, environment-destroying factory worker, the game is a plotless sandbox about math and logistics, every other loreless game along these lines (Factorio, Astroneer etc.) intentionally leaves the player character featureless (neither male nor female), because that's not what matters

but they went out of their way to make the featureless character feminine, and the developers also made a big deal out of it a few years ago like "yeah chuds, you gotta DEAL WITH IT, you're a WOMAN and you'll always be a WOMAN, that's the character we made conservatives"

There's a few people in there trying to be accurate and explain how much this would cost but everyone else on the zeitgeist of the gaming community is THEY FUCKED UP THEY HATE WOMEN SOUNDS ABOUT WHITE MALE eventually culminating in Messofanego posting a picture of the current dev team (which started as six dudes) complaining about how it's all white cishet men and the few women don't count.

This just speaks to the makeup of teams and the blindspots. The team's written statements say they "try to foster an open and inclusive work environment" (props for being a co-op) but also who you hire matters, and when your team is 32 mostly white dudes, with about 6 female developers who are not in lead positions to call the shots (Sandra Anden is an animator, Simone Jahn and Harpa Ellertsdottir are 3D artists), this is still likely to happen unfortunately.

Denmark is over 91% white and well more than half of the rest are white-adjacent. (Asian) Around 1% is of African ethnicity.

Either way, I bounced off the game immediately because of this lack of rep and also because I actually couldn't stand listening to the male VA for very long. Dude sounds like literal gravel scraping against my ears; I have no idea how people put up with it.

I do wonder how many lost sales/customers this single aspect accounts for. Probably not an insignificant number.

There's a lot of ways the devs could do this wrong and a few ways the devs can do this right, and no one knows which is which until the money has been spent. And if they do it wrong they're gonna get hit with a bunch of bad PR and if they do it right they'll get a likely negligible bump in sales.

"Accidentally overlook" is, again, not something that makes me feel better in an industry that has repeated this pattern from before 5 years ago. The reverse would never happen. An all women dev team wouldn't "accidentally overlook" adding men to a multiplayer game. I'm not angry and going to yell at them about it, but I'm not giving it a pass either. That comes if they actually show they learned from it.

You can customize skin tone to literally any color you want. There's a few "black" hair styles as well, though they could definitely add more.
