Without realizing it at the time, I witnessed an end to a 6 year working relationship today. Just a faster than normal goodbye between the two people I work with.



Later on I get called into a managers office, he sounds serious, I wonder if I'm in trouble and it turns out they're laying off one of the people I work with.



And the conversation about it felt gross. So I get a raise. And I'm in so much debt I can't even pretend like I'm considering taking a moral stance here. I never asked why, but I suppose they're not satisfied with her and they feel like I'll pick up the slack. They said numerous times, we're able to do this because you're here, which I don't know how they wanted me to take that.



Logistically it's confusing because she's in the middle of several projects. I'm still learning this stuff and then I have to take it over. I'm not proven at this job at all yet. But next week it'll have been three months so maybe they were waiting for that.



Personally, she's about to get married. People from the office are invited to the wedding. The honeymoon PTO is scheduled. And we were literally planning a shower for her. And then on top of that I'm playing her in fantasy football this week.



And then that all calls into question my relationship and dynamic with the team lead because I legitimately thought they were friends and management made it seem like she's been psyched for this. So can I trust her going forward?



I do wonder if she knows something is up because her goodbye to me today was also a little weird. Normally it's just see you tomorrow or next week, but this was I'll see you eventually or something like that.



A lot of it's just business talk, but how does this not feel personal. I'm not a replacement. They're doing all this technical stuff and I'm literally coloring PowerPoint.

On another note, selfishly speaking, I feel like I'm set to make too much money to be as broke as I am. Like people roll their eyes at six figure people saying they live check to check, but until you make all that money, you're only getting a little at a time. I don't make THAT much, but three months in, I'm mostly paying off debt, but also had spent $2000 on car repairs in the last three months. I couldn't even cover the repair I needed yester
