The idea that the vague corporate talking points (and indeed, that vagueness is the point- what exactly are those tasks that are deemed to be "tedious?" They never explain. Gee, I wonder why) about generative AI's boons to the arts are sincere is laughable when not only are the companies themselves or their sycophants not actually providing the metadata necessary to prove these talking points as fact, but the affected workers are telling you to your faces that they are experiencing massive layoffs, displacement and isolation, and decreased efficiency.
This is not even counting the fact that the very nature of the system of capitalism is mired in the contradictions of lofty, seemingly humanistic promises to smooth over nakedly economic and imperialist ends for the few. The car was supposed to "free the man." Social media was supposed to "bring us together." And now, gen AI is supposed to "democratize art." It's always meaningless, feelgood paff that nonetheless gets swallowed whole by the undiscerning masses constantly waiting for this magical technological boom that is supposed to "save them" from the dehumanization of the very system they place their hopes in.
It is especially apparent with generative AI that this is all really an attempt to exponentially increase the level of exploitation and profit theft not just within the arts but everywhere this shit is being pushed when you fundamentally understand that profit solely comes from the exploitation of human labor, both physical and intellectual. You can't exploit an algorithm and magically pay it less than what it costs to operate the machinations necessary for its "work" (which I put in quotes because robots, algorithms, etc. do not actually classically perform labor like humans because they are fundamentally not autonomous beings acting independently to change the world through that labor), meaning it can't be exploited. If it costs $1000/mo. to operate Midjourney, then that's just what it costs.
But humans can be exploited. You can enslave humans or just simply not pay them the value of what they produce, hence the very existence of profit. (And don't act like we still don't engage in slavery just because it's not happening on your great-great-great grandpappy's backyard anymore). And what better goldmine of exploitation than pretty much all of the art in human existence that was scraped without the consent of its creators and privatized through legally-dubious means, all of that physical and intellectual labor just gobbled up by craven capitalists and being sold back to you under these enticing Faustian promises that you will finally be that artist you always dreamed of being or that you will have to wait less time for your distracting little treats to be made? GenAI is not a tool in the traditional sense that it is an object meant to vacuously increase the potential of human labor power; it is also a medium based upon and through which human exploitation occurs simultaneously.
This, of course, is just on top of the fact that the data centers necessary to power these things are massive energy sinks which, in a society actively dying due to rapid climate change, are fundamentally unsustainable (hey, did you know we just reached a tipping point with coral reef death? Welp, now you can't un-know that). Electricity costs are soaring. Towns are having their drinking water sucked dry. Forests are being cleared and polluted. Going back to exploitation, African data workers are the ones who are having to manually pick through all of the violent imagery, CSAM, and other gnarly shit that was inevitably nabbed up by these data scrapers, leaving them riddled with psychological issues and turning to drug abuse. All of this misery and destruction so some nerd on the Internet can create an ugly fake Ghibli screenshot, or some rich asshole like Kojima can not deal with the "tedious tasks."
Granted, I know none of this matters within the context of a hobbyist culture founded on little more than mindless consumerism. I just mistakenly expected better

Quote:According to at least some technologists and CEOs's dire predictions, AI will herald the end of work as we know it — especially for white collar employees. Yet, for now, AI isn't as likely to steal your job as it is to reshape it.
The next couple of years will likely be bumpy as companies and employees figure out what AI can do, workplace observers told Business Insider.
"It's still very, very early," Martha Gimbel, executive director and cofounder of the Budget Lab at Yale, told Business Insider. She said the fears about AI as an imminent job killer "speaks to how much this debate has, frankly, gotten a little bit out of control."
Recent Budget Lab research has found that, in the nearly three years since the release of ChatGPT, the overall labor market hasn't experienced major disruptions. That's because it often takes years — even decades — for people and businesses to adopt even breakthrough tech.
Quote:More than one in five US workers use AI to complete at least some of their work, the Pew Research Center found in a September survey. That's up from 16% about a year earlier.
Some of those workers are likely in areas such as customer service or communications, which involve keyboard-heavy tasks where AI can excel.
Generative AI can help communications staffers save 26% to 36% of their time, a recent study from Boston Consulting Group found. If companies change their processes, BCG estimates that GenAI can help increase the time savings of comms workers by 47%.
Quote:The Economic Innovation Group, in a recent analysis of the effect of AI on jobs, found that workers "highly exposed" to AI are doing better in the labor market than those who are less so. The think tank said that workers more exposed to AI earn more, are more likely to have an undergraduate or graduate degree, and are less likely to be unemployed.
