I understand that oldheads who played the original 2D games were forced to engage their imagination due to the technical limitations of what was on screen, but to what degree were they imagining a livability to the graphical fidelity? Nothing about this franchise's art as it has developed throughout the decades has made it ever seem like they wanted to depict anything but a really cartoony fantasy world, a dream to some degree. At most, I can see the expectation of a Mario Kart style of graphical fidelity (which I'd say we got with New Pokemon Snap), but even then when I was neck-deep in firehopping in 8 vanilla, I never felt like I was "there" from the graphics alone. So really, what are people expecting? As a translation of the 2D art, the current 3D games work as an overall art style.

Ultimately though, what this feels more and more like is people who got older trying to demand this children's game grow up with them, and this is not an implication to not critique the games within artistic and technical merits, but rather a call to get some perspective of what the franchise actually is, what are the goals of the games are from the perspective of the company (not the artists, because they have no control,) and how you (the royal you) as a conscious adult see yourself in relation to these titles. I know embattled Pokemon fans say they hang on because they're empassioned and want to see the franchise improve, but to me that's nonsense because they, like the artists, also have no control over the franchise's direction given that they are not owners of this IP, the biggest IP on the planet I might. So what if they don't like the textures in ZA? Ishihara's feelings will not be hurt over this revelation.

Ultimately though, either the textures and performance override any potential enjoyment one may have of the other things the games have to offer or they don't. One's personal grading scale is their own and if the buildings in ZA are so ugly that one is not interested in anything else the game has to offer, then that's fine.... Just don't drop $60-$100 on it. If the franchise doesn't improve to one's standards for future titles, then move on. Nostalgia is toxic, our childhoods are not sacrosanct, and life is short. It is okay to leave franchises and find other shit to do. I left Sonic for like 15 years when I realized it's dumb for me to waste emotional labor over a mediocre product within which I have no direct influence over (and I'm stll not fully back because Frontiers was too finicky in its physics for me to ever fully let go and trust the game.) Pokemon fans could stand to learn the same.

They're definitely talking about the PVP. I just don't think 4-player co-op is going to keep Halo in the public consciousness for more than, like...a week. Without the competitive MP it's going to vanish very quickly.

I do know they meant pvp, but multiplayer means multiplayer and I'm being pedantic.
However I highly doubt this was made to ever be a complete mainline game so doing full PVP would have been redundant, especially when most people think of Halo2 when they think PVP. Also video games don't just vanish because you don't do PVP and we need to stop forcing that thinking on developers, we have enough work as it is.

Not sure if I would classify myself as a gooner in the traditional sense, but I definitely do confess to being a porn addict of sorts. The main differences I guess would be I don't participate in group masturbation (I prefer to keep my activities strictly solo), my "cave" is actually pretty neat and isn't nearly as decked out much as others (the most I have is a vertical monitor that sits beside my main one that I use to browse during work), and I'm not really trying to reach any 'goonstate' (though I do remember experiencing something similar when I was much younger). Thanks to how technology is these days, that temptation is just always there. Combine that with my obsessive-compulsive tendencies along with possible undiagnosed ADHD, and you have a recipe for addiction. I also have a collector's/data hoarding mindset, so I do admit to have bought a 4TB NVME just to hold my curated collection. Looking at porn has sort of become my default reaction when confronted with any slightly boring or stressful task that would force me to leave my mental comfort zone, even getting food or sleeping (believe the technical term for this is procrasturbating).

A few months ago I was at a con, sitting at a bar, and this girl comes up and we get into an admittedly pretty deep conversation about a lot of things, but then the topic of gooning somehow comes up. She asks if I was one. I tell her that I wasn't sure, but I did have an unhealthy porn addiction, so maybe it was possible. She asks why I was a gooner, and I told her it was probably because of the immediate access to porn. She sits there for a moment puzzled, "yeah I figured, but that still doesn't really answer WHY you would be one." That interaction has stuck with me since then because I still can't really come to a clear answer to that question.
