That's right.

why is everyone's first instinct to categorize themselves? liking something doesn't make you "a furry," if you're "a furry" then you're deep in the lifestyle and being unfathomably cringe and off-putting and probably fucking the family dog
but everyone can look at kung fu panda or zootopia and say "that's an appealing character design"
that doesn't make you a furry, it makes you normal, regular people are able to find all kinds of weird character designs relatable or fun, like the personification of emotions or little big planet guy or whatever It's part of the motte-and-bailey all these people do constantly. Remember when they were all "being a feminist just means you don't hate women" and then five seconds later will have a giant list of requirements to continue being a feminist.
It's probably not intentional but it sets up a trap. Once you identify with a group there's a cost associated with unidentifying out of the group. Then after a death of a thousand cuts to stay a feminist you have to demand men have access to all women's spaces and the destruction of Israel. To stay pro-LBGT you have to believe that homosexuality isn't real. To stay pro-Sony you can't question if they're mismanaging their assets. Et al.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

I find it hilarious that the people most upset by this are also advocates for communist revolution where an unelected body of people would take the elected leaders out behind the shed and summarily execute them for the crime of not being communist.

It's Vimes, it's kind of his thing.
Also, the theory is that he can never amass the $50 needed to buy the good boots because bring poor is so damn expensive.
This subsequent quote sums things up nicely

You wouldn't want him involved in FOIA, you'd want him with access to actual files that he could leak. FOIA is a completely toothless law, it can't compel disclosures and all departments and agencies are empowered to determine by themselves with no oversight what is open to FOIA. (Which is why they always decide that almost nothing is.) That's why you need a Snowden or Manning or Ellsberg, almost always someone young and idealistic, who circumvents the process completely because the security setup is based around nobody being willing to risk giving up their life.
But you're also posting on a forum where people regularly attack Snowden because he was/is vaguely libertarian, opposes Democrats too and also because he fled to an "enemy" rather than accept being thrown in a blacksite.

I know you know, but that's why I love Pratchett so much. He can pen a simple little theory like this and have actual economists debating it's merits. But he has also succinctly boiled down the financial issues of the everyman...people know what the good decision is but still can't make it because they have no self-control.
Vimes is a raging alcoholic but complains about the affordability of boots. Never about the affordability of alcohol. It's only when he gets tangled up with "the rich" that he starts to make good decisions that benefit him. I think the message is that being poor is a self-fulfilling prophecy for many people.

I get that, but the example sucks. The $10 boots last for a season or two and he wears them into the ground anyway. He can't know when he needs the new boots, so he has to budget at least $10 available every season. He's paid monthly so he should only have to really risk pushing things maybe once to be in position to buy the good boots after his next payment.
This is why writers should learn basic math.
Spoiler: (click to show)(click to hide) I'm joking but this is mostly the basis of the argument, especially how Era uses it, the person like Dr. Nothing Loud is assumed to be incapable of budgeting at all.
I feel like his boots only last a season or two also because he is poor, and forced to work jobs that involve heavy use of boots
I bet he would find that the really good boots would also wear out quickly for him, and that the rich stay rich by simply not working outdoors, or not needing to commute far and wearing out their transportation, not to mention all the time wasted in travel or tedious, repetitive manual labor that they can instead spend on activities that directly earn or save them more money

so, I agree that members of the armed forces should refuse illegal orders that violate laws or rights or the constitution
the problem with this is assuming the average service member knows the law well enough to be able to make that determination without fucking up their life completely
I'm picturing some left-leaning guy seeing this and then he's ordered to arrest someone and he refuses, and after a long court martial it's determined that the order was lawful
and then the consequences he suffers have a chilling effect on the rest of the military as they realize they don't really know which orders are lawful or unlawful themselves so they just do whatever they're told
not sure if this kind of message with what it implies should be done is a fully responsible one, but then again it is sentiment that should be allowed to be shared at any time, since on its face it is true
