So, an old friend invited me to have Thanksgiving dinner with her parents. I hadn't seen her in ages, but gratefully agreed. She seemed just as cool and funny and sweet and together as she did the first time I walked into her clothing shop in college.

I had never heard of Human Design before, so I just went along with it at first. It sounded like astrology. But we stayed up all night talking, and then more the next day and i began to grow concerned. She kept telling me HD isn't "esotericism" or "spirituality" - it's a "science." She also told me she has electrical signal sensitivity now (I forgot the term, but it's the condition from Better Call Saul).

Even at that point I thought "Into some woo woo shit, okay that's harmless, so whatever."

Until we texted over the next few days and I realized a few things. 1. It's ALL she wants to talk about. 2. It's rooted in delusional but I can't confront her about it because that never works, ever. I value our friendship more than I care to do #2 but then #1 becomes an issue and I don't know how to proceed. She has already said she won't be friends with anyone if their charts or whatever don't align.

It's very obviously one of those MLM things where to make money you have to become a coach pay the price of admission, and only the top tiers of the pyramid scheme make money off the bottom.

Additionally I was shocked (but not really) to see how popular it was. There are four year schools people go to for this, but if you are just a casual practitioner the serious "readings" cost a ton of money. And of course the coaches are charging typical lifecoach fees for "clarification" of an entirely nebulous, psuedoscientific system that.....some guy created in the late 80s taking acid in Ibiza.

This sadly has become a recurring theme for many of my old friends. The whole western world is losing its mind. People need heroic roles to play that no longer exist for the vast majority, and "meaning" in a sick, secular world because capitalism is a void and they only end up being exploited, like a thrashing animal hurting itself trying to break free.

It's their raison d'etre. I am miserable and nothing is ever my fault so it must be not only some kind of systemic problem imposed on me but one that everyone is also feeling so therefore I am entirely justified in engaging in anti-social behavior at all times with no criticism. And if anyone takes issue with this or disagrees with me that is not just obviously illegitimate (they have privilege) but it's also proof of the system coming after me just because I'm me which itself justifies more anti-social behavior including up to the use of violence against this threat. Not even disappointed or anything. There’s no shortage of good Star Trek media out there. I saw a headline about The Simpsons Movie 2. There’s vastly more Simpsons that I didn’t watch than I did. That’s okay. 

Sometimes I think about how Detective Conan has 1200 episodes and 28 movies and if there are fans of the first 150 or whatever.

edit: Some of the books and comics are quite good, others are very bad. I think the novels can get more worser than the comics. New Frontier (from the same Peter David) is probably the best and most consistent of it all. Though I haven't read almost any of the novels since the DS9 Relaunch was first happening. At some point later they explain and permanently destroy The Borg. Discovery obviously ignores all this. The "relaunch" novels were once canon, Picard flirts with some of it being still canon because they took from Online which used some of it. There's probably four or five Trek "canons" now, it's worse than superhero comics.
