This Asian Grocery/restaurant discourse reminds me of January & February 2020 when people not going to the Vancouver shopping mall, which has a large Chinese clientele and staff in some stores only speak Mandarin or Cantonese, was racist.

It wasn't the white people avoiding the mall because they were scared of the weird flu from Wuhan, they rarely shopped there in the first place.

Further upon rereading Nepenthe's post, I notice that she calls the Europeans "foreign" when the Africans were just as foreign and just as much colonizers as they never returned anything to the Taino people. I don't think I would give anyone side eyes in grocery store. Grocery is grocery. But I've definitely given people side eyes for ordering chow mein and general tso at authentic Chinese restaurants. That's just disrespectful to the chef.

Eh, months ago a Chinese dude that lives in the same department building as me opened a barber shop that seems exclusively catered to Chinese people, for some reason.  (as, everything is in Chinese). Has almost no clientele and seems that occasionally just gathers other Chinese neighbors to talk, not necessarily to pay for a cut. (I joke that is secret mahjong parlor  )

Probably is something with first generation immigrants that act this way, we are close to Chinatown but the influx of eastern Asian people is pretty recent. Dunno what are the inner politics of immigrants here, so maybe is a situation like, for lack of better example, Yakuza:Like a Dragon (new Chinese immigrants displaced by old Chinese ones).
