Jared Hess makes the best-yet video game adaptation, blooming with childhood’s delight. But Ryan Coogler’s childish approach to black American culture — this time as a vampire rampage — insults authentic blues heritage while delighting only Obama-addled libs.

Happy Gilmore 2 > One Battle After Another

Kyle Newacheck directed Adam Sandler’s vision of American harmony-among-many — a golf-farce tournament played against the violent conflict of political adversaries. Sandler’s good humor opposed P.T.A.’s unbearable partisan vengeance.

From her retweets I also learned that the World Cup is over because nobody supports it being held in an authoritarian country:

the fact that this was paywalled pissed me off so fuck them

Quote:Rosie Jones – the impeccably progressive millennial comedian who has appeared on everything from The News Quiz to 8 Out of 10 Cats – says she’s sick of “privileged cis white straight men” making “inappropriate jokes” about “the trans community”. In an interview with the LGBTQIA+ magazine Attitude, she complains: “It’s your Ricky Gervaises [and] Jimmy Carrs… To those boys, I’d say, with respect, shut the f— up.”
Of course, if you yourself happen to be a “privileged cis white straight man”, you may be wondering whether these strictures also apply to you, and the jokes you tell. I rather fear that they do. But don’t fret. Because, in the same interview, Ms Jones graciously provides us with her expert advice on “how to tell a joke responsibly”. (What a wonderful phrase. It sounds like the warning on a bottle of alcohol. “Please joke responsibly. Laugh in moderation. The Chief Medical Officer recommends you do not exceed 14 smiles a week. Remember: humour can kill.”)
Anyway, on to that essential guide. “Before you tell a joke,” Ms Jones instructs us, “you need to analyse it, and that comes down to three things. First: who are you? Do you have lived experience, or experience close to you?”
If I’ve understood correctly, this means you’re not permitted to make jokes at the expense of people who are different from you. So, for example, Messrs Gervais and Carr should not be making jokes about trans women, because they themselves don’t have “lived experience” of being trans women.
True enough. On the other hand, they do both have “lived experience” of being male – just like all trans women. Does that not qualify them? And, while we’re at it, does the above rule mean that, if you yourself are not a “cis white straight man”, you’re not allowed to make fun of cis white straight men? Indeed, are you only permitted to mock, say, Donald Trump if you yourself have “lived experience” of being president of the USA? Or does the rule not apply in these particular cases?
I suspect not, judging by the second question Ms Jones exhorts us to ask ourselves. “What is your intention – is it positive or negative? Are you punching up, or punching down?”
For anyone unfamiliar with this piece of progressive comedy jargon, “punching up” is good, because it means making fun of people who are more privileged than you, while “punching down” is bad, because it means making fun of people who are less privileged than you. Admittedly, you may be thinking: “Hang on. What about all those well-off, middle-class, Left-wing comedians who have spent the past decade making fun of working-class Brexit voters and ‘redneck’ Trump supporters?” But I expect this is just another of those special scenarios in which the rules don’t apply.
At any rate, let’s not dwell on that, because we now come to the final question Ms Jones wishes us to consider. Which is: “Why are you telling the joke? Are you asking a question to open up a conversation and make people think differently? Or are you saying it simply to be controversial?”
Perhaps my memory deceives me, but I would swear there was a time when comedians had another motivation for telling jokes: that is, they wanted to make people laugh. Strange as it may now seem, the thought of “opening up a conversation” and “making people think differently” appeared not to occur to them. For example: when Bob Monkhouse joked, “I want to die like my father, peacefully in his sleep – not screaming and terrified, like his passengers”, was he trying to “open up a conversation” about sudden arrhythmic death syndrome? Or about the pressing need to revoke the driving licences of elderly motorists, for the safety of other road users?
I fear not. These days, his approach to comedy is no doubt considered hideously outdated. Still, I can think of one Monkhouse line that modern progressive stand-ups could use.
“People laughed when I said I wanted to be a comedian. Well, they’re not laughing now.”

Shitty article. The proper tact is this, demonstrate how it meets her own standards:
Quote:What is your intention – is it positive or negative? Are you punching up, or punching down?
Making fun of the trans community is punching up. As evidenced by the fact that you're apparently not allowed to make fun of them for any reason, not even to mock their "science" or misogyny.

Quote:Why are you telling the joke? Are you asking a question to open up a conversation and make people think differently? Or are you saying it simply to be controversial?
Wouldn't making fun of the trans community meet the first one if it's intended as criticism of them?

To put it another way, this question seems to imply that the problem with racist humor is only when it's not legitimately racist. Saying the n-word because it'll get you upset is wrong but saying the n-word as part of opening up a conversation about bringing back slavery is acceptable.

that's not generally what's happening though

for instances where it might be approaching that territory, it would need to be reported to the authorities, but people aren't doing that because they know it doesn't tend to rise to that level, instead just preferring to propagate the assumption that it must be out there nudifying everyone

I'm not defending its ability to put people in bikinis, it's non-consensual and morally/ethically dubious at best, but let's at least be honest about what it is

Quote:"I oppose the US empire AND the Iranian regime!"

No, you support the US empire. If you desire the downfall of the Iranian government in today's present geopolitical reality, then you desire the expansion of US imperial power. It doesn't matter how much lip service you pay to opposing the US murder machine if in practice you are promoting the agendas of the worst warmongers in the DC swamp.

There is at this time no way Tehran can be toppled without the US-centralized empire inserting its rapey fingers into whatever power structure would emerge from the wreckage. When you overthrow a government you leave a power vacuum, and somebody's going to step into it. There is no clear movement, faction, or successor in Iran that is strong enough to secure power against whichever group the empire throws its support behind, besides the government that presently exists. This means the US empire would necessarily have a very prominent seat at the table in whatever system of government might replace the current one.

If you are a western imperialist then this is no problem for you; if you believe the US and its allies should rule the world then there is no contradiction in your desiring regime change in Iran. If you identify as a leftist, an anarchist, or an anti-imperialist however, there is no way to reconcile your worldview with a desire to fulfill the wildest regime change fantasies of every sociopathic intelligence agency and warmongering think tank in the western world.

The only way for such a character to avoid the cognitive dissonance of these contradictions would be to pretend they live in an imaginary fantasy land where the Iranian government could be overthrown without benefitting the US empire. The Iranian people just oust their government all on their own, and then set up a free liberal democracy that is entirely sovereign and independent from any external power structure. That's a fantasy. We do not live in that kind of world. We live in the world that actually exists.

It's not okay to avoid addressing reality like that. You can't just close your eyes and put your fingers in your ears and pretend the reality of our situation is different from what it actually is while helping to advance immensely consequential agendas driven by the most powerful people in the world. Being an authentic person means being real about reality and having a truth-based relationship with the world as it actually is.

I am not suggesting that Iranians do not have legitimate and organic grievances against their government, nor am I suggesting that they should not desire a different system of government for themselves, nor am I suggesting that they should refrain from doing whatever they think is best in their own country. What I am saying is that the westerners who are cheerleading for regime change in Iran are cheerleading for the advancement of the power structure under which they live, which also happens to be the most powerful empire that has ever existed, which also happens to be the most murderous and destructive power structure on earth.
