Mattel Inc. is introducing an autistic Barbie on Monday as the newest member of its line intended to celebrate diversity, joining a collection that already includes Barbies with Down syndrome, a blind Barbie, a Barbie and a Ken with vitiligo, and other models the toymaker added to make its fashion dolls more inclusive.

Mattel said it developed the autistic doll over more than 18 months in partnership with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights and better media representation of people with autism. The goal: to create a Barbie that reflected some of the ways autistic people may experience and process the world around them, according to a Mattel news release.
Quote:For example, the eyes of the new Barbie shift slightly to the side to represent how some people with autism sometimes avoid direct eye contact, he said. The doll also was given articulated elbows and wrists to acknowledge stimming, hand flapping and other gestures that some autistic people use to process sensory information or to express excitement, according to Mattel.

The development team debated whether to dress the doll in a tight or a loose-fitting outfit, Pervez said. Some autistic people wear loose clothes because they are sensitive to the feel of fabric seams, while others wear figure-hugging garments to give them a sense of where their bodies are, he said.

The team ended up choosing an A-line dress with short sleeves and a flowy skirt that provides less fabric-to-skin contact. The doll also wears flat shoes to promote stability and ease of movement, according to Mattel.

Each doll comes with a pink finger clip fidget spinner, noise-canceling headphones and a pink tablet modeled after the devices some autistic people who struggle to speak use to communicate.

The addition of the autistic doll to the Barbie Fashionistas line also became an occasion for Mattel to create a doll with facial features inspired by the company’s employees in India and mood boards reflecting a range of women with Indian backgrounds. Pervez said it was important to have the doll represent a segment of the autistic community that is generally underrepresented.

Mattel introduced its first doll with Down syndrome in 2023 and brought out a Barbie representing a person with Type 1 diabetes last summer. The Fashionistas also include a Barbie and a Ken with a prosthetic leg, and a Barbie with hearing aids, but the line also encompasses tall, petite and curvy body types and numerous hair types and skin colors.

Of all the crimes of social media, the emergence of the "influencer" is probably the worst. A bunch of retards who just want to be famous talking about stuff they don't understand or have an interest in, just dropping hot takes on whatever is topical.

I fucking hate Millennials for making this a thing.

...n-no...? not at all?

looks like they wanted to do that but were reluctant to alter the molds/paint alignment machines and got told ok we can do them 1mm off center without incurring a $100,000 reconfiguration and calibration both ways

YOU CRAZY MAN YOU CRAZY

also aren't the bold stripes of the dress kind of overstimulating for such a person?

anyway that article led me to this one, which is a couple years old now

https://apnews.com/article/cherokee-nation-wilma-mankiller-mattel-barbie-oklahoma-060faaf1d0cc13e401e79497c14b65cc

Quote:Barbie doll honoring Cherokee Nation leader Wilma Mankiller is met with mixed emotions

Quote:Still, some Cherokee women are critical, saying Mattel overlooked problematic details on the doll and the packaging.

“Mixed emotions shared by me and many other Cherokee women who have now purchased the product revolve around whether a Wilma Barbie captures her legacy, her physical features and the importance of centering Cherokee women in decision making,” Stacy Leeds, the law school dean at Arizona State University and a former Cherokee Nation Supreme Court justice, told The Associated Press in an email.

Regina Thompson, a Cherokee basket weaver who grew up near Tahlequah, doesn’t think the doll looks like Mankiller. Mattel should have considered traditional pucker toe moccasins, instead of black shoes, and included symbols on the basket that Cherokees use to tell a story, she said.

“Wilma’s name is the only thing Cherokee on that box,” Thompson said. “Nothing about that doll is Wilma, nothing.”

The Cherokee language symbols on the packaging also are wrong, she noted. Two symbols look similar, and the one used translates to “Chicken,” rather than “Cherokee.”

Mattel spokesperson Devin Tucker said the company is aware of the problem with the syllabary and is “discussing options.”

I have to be honest, I don't think the Islamic Republic has it in them to crush the Imperial core. This guy must have missed what happened to them... uh, well, in all of its history but especially about a decade ago when the Imperial core destroyed its economy overnight.

I think people need to figure out if these protests are dangerous or not. Now common sense would suggest that if you protest a group, which you believe are Nazis, it's not a safe environment for your baby.

Quote:In 2021, Australia’s total Jewish population was estimated to be 116,967 people in 49,040 Jewish households and constituted 0.46% of the national population which stood at 25.4 million people. 19,973 Jewish families had at least one child living at home.

Between 2011 and 2021 the Jewish population grew by 1.2% compared with growth of 19% in the general population.

Man, those damn Jews are just so good they can take over the country while being less than half a percent of the population.

Is "Imperial Core" an Andor thing because it sounds like the sort of thing the left would take from Andor #resistance

No, it's really old leftie buzzwords based around the idea that that the US Empire violently extracts resources from the periphery to enrich the Empire's center core. If you object that the US (and EU which is a client state of the Empire) pays for that stuff you're forgetting that under capitalism all transactions are exploitive.

Please ignore that all these same people complain that the US has cut off Iran (or others like Cuba) from being exploited.

The whole colonial rhetoric about Imperial cores just doesn't really work all that well when there's no literal colonies.
