Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine and expanding the FCC's (a body appointed by the two main political parties with statutory party balance mandated) purview to all speech would definitely see it struck down as a First Amendment violation and possibly open up the Court to finally start to rid us of the remainder of the FCC. I'd love another own goal by the speech censors like Citizens United.

For the record, the Fairness Doctrine was rarely enforced because rather than spend the money to comply most stations simply stopped airing political issues programming. Good luck getting the genocide or whatever anti-fascist stuff you want on the air. Remember when we weren't supposed to platform Trump/Nazis/etc.? I've read Atlas Shrugged, I really disliked it, and I can't hate her over it. I get that she left a country rife with corruption as a child then came to America and got hit with both barrels of propaganda meant to tell you that you could trust in the leaders of industry, that the big corporations were paving the way to a great big beautiful tomorrow.

Thread doesn't know that Rand rejected libertarianism and the entire Objectivist movement condemns it because it's not totalitarian. Rand's position was that true freedom came from duty to correct thought. She was against socialism because she saw the Soviets attempt to implement it under Lenin. If she hadn't started from a liberal framework she would have been just another totalitarian but because of that there's a constant thread throughout her work that constantly bumps up against advocacy for state coercion but she was smart enough to realize this and so seemed to suggest a system of enforcement through snarky shaming.

The thing is that this is missing the forest for the trees. We absolutely don't know the details of the legal situation. But the Grandfather is framing it as the child literally having no one when we know that is not true. Regardless of the legal nature of their relationship, we do know that the child and the widow lived together. The child is not literally living alone. Furthermore, Good's mother (aka the child's grandmother) is also alive. So regardless of stepparent dynamics, the kid having no one else in his life is not true. Even if it's not due to homophobia, it's a very sus way to describe the situation with the other facts and really just makes it about himself.

The other part of this that is so baffling is that a lot of people don't seem to have a very active imagination about how bad things could get. Ice is basically the president's personal police force.
