I'm currently about 12 days out from my driving test in the UK, and I want to use this forum post as a little bit of a vent so I can get out my frustrations with the whole process as someone that struggles with severe anxiety and whos life has been on hold for a long time due to it.

I started learning to drive 15 years ago when I was 18. I was a hot headed 18 year old that had not fully understood why I got sweaty and panicky when anything challenging came my way, or why I acted out when things became overwhelming. I took three driving tests, two which I fully understand as I was dangerous but my third test I fully believe was overly harsh as the serious fault listed I've seen may say was a minor for them.

Following my third test, I gave up entirely as it felt like I was actually getting worse with each successive test and was destroying my already fragile mental health. It feels like there are so many rules, checks and procedures that all must be accounted for at all the right times, otherwise you're destined for a fail and another go round the test booking fiasco. Little did I know how good I had it back then with tests freely available weeks apart.

Fast forward to now, approaching the middle of my thirties, and life has been on hold for nearly a decade post university as I'm unable to secure independence and freedom living in a small town where public transport is almost unusable. My friends have all moved away and on with their lives, the majority getting married and having children. I'm still at home and unable to grow. I buy a small automatic car with the savings I've accrued working for over a decade and doing nothing with my life but saving money. I decide that it's finally time to get back on the horse.

I've done weekly drives with my parents where available since November 2024, and about 25 hours of instructed practice with a qualified instructor leading up to my current test date. It now takes 6 months to book a test in the United Kingdom, and lessons cost £37 an hour. The driving test I booked in August 2025 is now approaching, the final week of January 2026.

Even with nearly 100 hours of practice under my belt since starting this journey again, I'm still unable to read traffic situations successfully and lack the confidence needed to pass the test. Every time I go out driving there is always something that crops up that would certainly be a serious fault on my driving test. Undue hesitation, poor road positioning, lack of checks or the incorrect procedure of checking mirrors and signals. During a lesson yesterday I hit the curb while pulling up on the left, something that will be asked of me up to 5 times on my test.

Driving is starting to feel like something I'm never going to master, especially when the requirement is as high as it is for the UK driving test. I'm never going to drive perfectly for 40 minutes with the level of anxiety I suffer from, but also it feels like the one thing that's stopping my life from progressing in any meaningful manner. I'm stuck in a job because it's walkable from my parents house. I can't even think of starting relationships because transport is a requirement. Friends are harder to visit and our relationships are starting to drift and breakdown.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say with this post other than I'm just trying to vent off some of the frustration I feel on a day to day basis, and the chokehold that driving has on the progression of my life. Is anyone else going through this process, or if you've passed what helped you finally get that blue slip of paper? The majority of stories I hear is examiners that have been lenient on the day making it a bit of a lottery if you pass or fail, which makes it even worse.
