People only talk about the Raimi movies because they're the ones they saw when they were 10-15 years old. They're not that great on their own, mainly because Maguire is a mediocre actor and he and Dunst have negative screen chemistry. But they have jammed themselves into millenials' skulls by childhood association and they'll never leave.

If you really think that kids who grew up in the past decade have the same personal association with the Raimi movies that people our age do, I don't know what to tell you. People look more fondly at the shit they experienced when they were kids and didn't know better/didn't have meaningful points of comparison.

This is also why the SW prequels are having a major resurgence in the modern era - because people who grew up with them as "their" Star Wars movies are getting old enough to be nostalgic for them.

The point is that nostalgia is a revolving door and people need to make their peace with the fact that the stuff they grew up with won't be relevant forever, and that stuff they might not be as big on will be another generation's nostalgia-bait.

Way to completely ignore the critical reception to these movies when they came out. People have always singed high praise for these movies and twenty years later many inside and outside the industry still do, so these "it's only nostalgia" arguments are kinda silly

I mean, going to a total different direction can work, I seen this in comics, tv show and games.

The thing is that more often than not you should at least respect what it came before, at least if there is a preexisting fanbase.

Using Sonic again as example: those films also took a lot of liberties  (specially the first two) including Sonic having part of his personality altered but is clear they took their time to adapt this stuff. Maybe the basic beats are still the same (blue fast hedgehog vs comical evil genius)but they feel sincere compared over other other franchises repeating story beats in almost cynical way (while not offering any sort of complexity in exchange).

I’m  going to be blunt and say that many of these producers and screenwriters are not as talented as they think they are. It would be nice if Hollywood allowed to have more original stuff, but I suspect a lot of those stories will still be trite.
