If theres one thing the team have done right, its keeping the AI hype machine where it belongs. I am *sick* to the core with people banging on about AI  - here and elsewhere - while people are being jailed and genocided with the same tools. If there is one commonality with proponents of AI its their indifference to the suffering of others. I can't afford any patience and kindness to those who would not afford it unto others.



As to why they can't outright ban it, its because this shit is practically everywhere - in media, in politics, in developing news - its a tall order to police and ensure that people don't mention it or discuss it in any capacity. It was hard enough with Harry Potter media, and now people are expecting this ubiquitous thing to just be outrighted banned from being mentioned in the bevy of new stories that hits Era everyday. Like, come on its wildly out of touch to expect something like that.

there are a lot of frankly irresponsible articles about AI datacenters destroying local water

poor old grandma is having her life destroyed living next to a georgia datacenter:

but then you do the smallest amount of investigation, you look up when the datacenter was built:

they broke ground on it back in 2018 and would've started planning to build it years before, so this isn't an "AI" datacenter (to this day practically no datacenters are "AI" datacenters, they're used for many purposes)

the article says she retired and moved there in 2016, so it's likely she could've found out the datacenter was going to be built there before she even bought the house

this is not to deny the experience she's having, but the article is meant to make mental connections and spread FUD to make you think that AI is draining people's water all over

practically all the datacenter stories cropping up in the press these days are from existing datacenters from before the AI boom, and they're just heartstrings human interest stories about the few people living next to them without honestly measuring the real environmental cost

they cite alarming-sounding numbers about how many millions of gallons of water are being moved around without putting any of it into context, the context being that all datacenter water usage is A) complicated and easy to be dishonest about from both sides, and B) absolutely dwarfed by orders of magnitude by agricultural water usage

I was a little disappointed that they said, "all the mods," when it was visible (and factually true) that Nepenthe single handedly made that decision for the entire board.  She didn't hide it.  She was proud of it.  After several threads of her whittling down the number of people who wanted to talk about what AI could do she was the one who justified the ban to the peasants and proclaiming it an AI freezone.
