Sadly, I no longer have a dedicated crew of irl people that I play video games with. Okay, I am going to try to word this very carefully. I live in the UK, and I partake in anti-fascist movements and discourse.

The rising tides of fascism in the UK are deeply concerning, but they are also not new. The country has had an on and off dalliance with fascist ideology for much of the 20th century, and this new rise is again, deeply concerning and should be met with all hostility, and all of those who are vulnerable and marginalised should be protected.

That said, there is a level of histrionic wallowing on the left, especially the online left, especially the online left who happen to make content about how the country is now a far-right, authoritarian fascist state and it is frankly, deeply unhelpful. It undermines the active leftist political movements in the country, it draws focus towards attacking the right rather than protecting those who need it, it comes across as insincere and devalues the true horror of fascism in the 20th century and into the 21st century. Chile was a fascist  state. Romania was a totalitarian state. The Balkans was a product of fascism. The UK does not resemble those whatsoever.

This narrative needs to die. I had an ex-partner who was Canadian (who grew up and lived in Alberta, of all fucking places) who believed that it "was impossible to be a leftist in the UK due to all the terfs" due to the continued  pushing of this narrative by those on the left, and it is undermining leftist movements in the UK and Europe and rather than energising people, it is giving into hysteria.
