The most "dehumanizing" thing about all of this is the admission that you can't control your emotions and response to something that is contextually meaningless.  You're admitting you're closer to an animal working on instinct that a reasonable human being.  There's no reason to hear this as anything but a guttural, involuntary, noise.  ....and yet, I'm on Nepenthe's side.  Which is why I can't read comic books anymore without losing control.

My job is to moderate the reports received in cooperation with the rest of the team and other administrative functions like handling tickets and account issues. It is not to force forum culture, something which I as an individual cannot do even if I wanted to because, at the end of the day, this is a forum filled primarily with white, middle and upper class neoliberal Western chauvanists and raging fans of capitalism. Anti-Blackness is fundamentally locked in due to the demographics and politics involved, and there is literally nothing I as an individual can do to fix that, nor do I take other people's racism on as my responsibility. You all are individually responsible for fixing your own politics.

This is factually untrue.  Your decisions on what subjects are ban worthy and who to ban can, and very much is, nurturing the very forum culture you purport to hate.  The very next sentence also calls the forum of resetera.com, as a whole, racist and misogynistic.  What happened to the nazi table analogy Nep?  If you continue to stay at that racist hellhole you must be fine with it, hell not only are you merely a member, you are an Admin laboring to uphold the values of capitalism, colonialism and white supremacy.  Of course no one on resetera will point out this rank hypocrisy because that would just immediately get them banned.  But any other member making blanket statements to the same effect would be permed immediately.  For resetera your continued adminship is anathema to a well run forum, we here at thebire thank you for being absolutely unhinged and giving us these great insights to laugh at.

Nah, I think it can be hurtful that even when you're at the height of your career and achieved things bigger than you could ever dream of you get a reminder that this still doesn't protect you from getting called the n-word. In that sense I feel bad for Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo. But I also imagine they're understanding enough that this wasn't intentional and controllable by the person who did it. It's simply an unfortunate situation

So far, there were three moderator actions logged on this thread: my initial lock, and two bans. The two bans were marked as trolling and insensitivity in the banner, but they were ostensibly for people being dismissive jackasses to Johnson's disability.

Literally no one has been actioned for racism, not even the people I've been arguing with. 

We simply told people to take it into account within the bounds of discussion with the staff post. And that, in itself, has been considered ableism.

And we wonder why some Black members are upset and feel dismissed!

I have no issue however with looking over some of the rejections and new reports. But in turn I reject the claim racism was given priority over the ableism in terms of staff action.

People with Tourette's live a life that most of us would have nightmares about. At any moment a tic could occur, not unlike a sneeze, but the difference is that a sneeze doesn't hurt anyone.

A person with Tourette's is not the only person who suffers as a result of it, the people around them do as well and that is why it is such a horrible condition. The man did nothing wrong, he basically sneezed, but that doesn't mean the people on the receiving end aren't allowed to feel the way they do about what came out instead of a sneeze.

Yes, the man has literally no control over it; yes, we should be understanding of his condition; but, in the end, we are all human and words like this cut deep. They revive old trauma and make those on the receiving end feel less than human.

Given people seem to be unable to acknowledge the complicated nature of the discussion, we are locking the thread.

I can't believe the internet community they have fostered is unable to have a nuanced discussion
