No offense to you specifically OP, and I'm not directing this at you fwiw, but as a reviewer myself, this is why I've always maintained that we, collectively, as a medium, should do away with scores for reviews. People hyperfocus on them, get way too precious about them, or read into them far too much and start going into games with certain expectations, then building resentment against them if they aren't quite met.

Xbox should've never existed in the first place. Why was Microsoft, the owner and maintainer of Windows, heavily invested in console gaming and putting their PC users at a disadvantage? A console of which came at the expense of probably landing where Steam is today. It's fine though. Everything worked out. They're now the largest Western publisher by far and now they're making money off everybody else's platforms.

What's great is he's seemingly not lying about any of it. The man's a completely open book about how he:
-Refused to sell his townhouse during his divorce and fought to keep it even though it's a $600K+ mortgage.
-Racked up another $200K+ (lowball estimate) of student loans to get his PhD on the belief that he'd instantly be making six and a half figures the day he got it.
-Divorced his "narcissist" husband who was the only one over the last few years with an income and continued income prospects from being a specialized teacher. (And also has dual citizenships he was previously considering fleeing the country using.)
-Despite having no job except for a temp position for a few months and possibly $1 million in debts continued buying all kinds of expensive junk on the claim that he would need it to do simple stats and then does little more than run games and emulators at high resolutions in the assumption that other people will care that he does this.
-Brought his around retirement age mom into his townhouse to help pay for it because he's unemployed and dumped the only breadwinner.
-Scared about starving to death because the food stamps he got applied for were temporarily restricted all while bitching that the food stamps didn't pay for enough for him to eat in the first place even though you can easily become obese on American food stamps especially in deep blue core of a blue state.
-Is seemingly no longer even attempting to get a job and instead is "founder" of the obviously worthless business run out of his townhouse that veers into outright scam territory with his mom running the actual business part (seemingly based on her "success" running other wellness scams) and some dude they/them he knows from across the country, that apparently lives in Florida, who appears to be the actual "artist" part of the business.
-Has an endless number of massively exaggerated to outright fake conditions including anxiety, PTSD, "autism", and others to where he is now pursuing disability rather than actually lower his job expectations. Previously attended therapy three times a week, also had separate couples therapy and has claimed to have "addicted" himself to weed in the past.
-Presumably is lying through obfuscation to officials to smooth his way into welfare, possibly with his mom's expert direction, because he's sitting on a big ass asset he could cash out of. 
-Has a terrible time on his favorite forum because he's delusional about AI just in the other direction and can't "read the room" after a decade of posting with the same people. (Just kidding, it's actually his newly discovered autism that prevents him from writing in ways that others will understand him even though he's always written like this.)
-Can't get a job in Europe despite everyone there wanting him because they don't have air conditioning.
-Oh, and all of the above is Trump's fault or his NARCISSIST ex's fault or capitalism's fault or the fact that he fled Columbia as a baby or... (And he's not lying about this when he tells the forum, he seems to literally believe it.)

Because they were afraid of Sony rendering the PC and thus Windows irrelevant. Something Sony executives liked to a spend a lot of time saying they were going to do with the PlayStation as a trojan horse into controlling the home computing and entertainment space. There were no smartphones then and internet was just beginning to enter into the home, so it was a reasonable fear and why Microsoft had bought WebTV in the first place. Everybody knew there would be some connected device that would dominate the home, just nobody knew what it would look like. A game console seemed a reasonable option, especially when Sony put a DVD player in the PS2 and people were buying it for just that.

Phones are what put a cap on the size of the console business and pretty much cut the legs out of what was Microsoft's strategy going into the Xbone.
