For context on the coordinated effort to kill Marathon: A lot of them are disgruntled Destiny players still holding a grudge against Bungie for deleting content they paid for and I can't really blame anyone for that. Quite possibly the most egregious thing I've ever seen done in a live service game as someone that's been playing MMOs for nearly 30 years.



7 years ago they went independent after splitting from Activision, their users forgave them for the mess that had been Destiny 1&2 up to that point, and things got a whole lot worse than under Activision rather than getting better. Compound that with Marathon fans who are upset that 'the setting is being wasted' on an extraction shooter GaaS instead of a PvE follow-up to Destiny or a single player title following up a beloved legacy franchise. Then you have the people who enjoyed Destiny 2 and saw it struggle in the year and a half leading up to Marathon and they're still awaiting 2026's roadmap as the game is dipping into the 7500-9000 24 hour peak CCU range.

I don't even care what at form it is, he could have been shitting on macrame and slam poetry, but given that there are like 12 people his age who even get to be A-list movie stars, maybe he shouldn't make fun of people who spend their energy trying to support art that doesn't land you a spot on the red carpet. He wants it easy, he wants to date a Kardashian, he's not driven by the kind of passion or willing to deal with the obscurity that haunts someone who goes out of their way to support more difficult or niche forms of art, fine. I came across this video recently that goes into the Orientalism and the depiction of the Gerudo in TLOZ games (which has gotten better even if not necessarily great). The portrayal being racist doesn't mean it was intentional, but tbf, Japan does have its own imperial and colonial history full of racism so you never know.

Ocarina of Time is a classic but it is, pretty uncontroversially, one of the most insanely racist games of all time lmao. Literally just a story about the white hero purifying the land of the dark taint of the decietful arab.

Even as a kid I picked up on how messed up that was, lol.

I watched this the other day. It's a good video. I love Ocarina of Time with all my heart but this is obviously something that is worthy of criticism and they approach the topic fairly well. People getting bent out of shape over this video need to chill (obviously not referring to anyone here). They make a point to say they don't think Nintendo was being deliberately malicious, just falling into common inherently racist tropes, and acknowledges that while they still have some improvements to make they have done work in recent games to address some of the criticism of the Gerudo in OOT. A well argued video all around.

I do think it's based in Islamophobic imagery, yeah.

On a general nerdy level, I tend to think a lot about Ganondorf as he's introduced in A Link to the Past because a lot of people tend to gloss that over. Thinking about it in this context, Ganondorf being a thief isn't original to Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past introduced. The Gerudo desert region isn't original to Ocarina of Time, exactly; I don't recall of the top of my head if it's mentioned in the NES games, but the desert in Ocarina of Time is full of sand monster enemies called the Gerudoman (translated as "Geldman").

So what Ocarina of Time actually did is take the established thieves, put them in the desert, establish them as a dark-skinned race, and name them after the desert or the sand monsters therein.

Ahh yeah the gerudo overall is loaded with orientalism.

But yeah, The Gerudo are very much a cultural caricature of various Middle Eastern/African groups, the recent games have this problem as well, unfortunately.

I need to watch the video later because this topic is new to me. I won't say OOT is not racist because it likely is.

It's a pretty good video! It provides an in-depth exploration on the concept of "the orient" and how that made its way into the Zelda franchise, racism and all.

So this is one of those things where they see similarities between a fictional race and real world cultures and decide it must be a horrible negative depiction of those real world people? Especially when they're the bad guys? Wouldn't it be racist and whatever-phobic to depict the Gerudo in any form at all then? Or does the "need for real diversity" (one of the chapter titles for the hour long video) mean "no villains but whites"?
