if one of your neighboring countries invaded and started bombing your country, you're not fighting back? if the media starts labeling you as terrorists, does that change anything for you?

Seriously, I'm trying not to negative nancy, but since there is so much speculation of whether this is "life changing" or "nothing", here is my TRY at a rough actual calculation: And yes, this can be off (but not by a 100% or something , since a) I am not self employed to compare and b) there are means nudge the tax statement to your advantage and recoup on it. Once again, just trying to give perspective besides the "crazy" gross amount.
Cakez77 seems to be based in Germany.
Assumption is 400k $ this year, meaning ~346k €
70% for cakez77 -> ~242k €
Income Tax for this year: 42% (~101k €) -> 131k €
Social security (pension, statutory medical-, long-time care-, unemployment insurance): ~17% (since there is no share taken by an employer) -> ~109k €
So ~109k € is the actual net of the 242k €.
This IS very rough and CAN be more, because there are assumptions involved:
- there is no value added tax, because steam and the amount is deemed pure profit in Germany
- he is self-employed and hasn't incorporated in a tax-friendly/tax-haven country for some shenanigans
- no deductions (advertising-, travel-, material-, etc. cost) before taxes
- he is actually doing voluntary pension and statutory insurance coverage on his own

To define this to be life changing or a drop in the bucket depends on personal circumstances, so impossible to evaluate objectively.

My personal opinion in this regard is, even if I would assume that despite this theoretical "numbers game" above, in reality there will probably be more net (let's just say 130k), ~2.7k net income per month return on 4 years sweat & tears investment would simply not be enough for me, even if it was worth it.
And that's why I am always trying to tell my children, that are so hyped by those stories and eager to try for themselves: to build your life on those dreams is a BIG gamble nearing lottery territory, because for every tangy td, there are thousands of net losses.. Be smart and invest into education, chances are much higher for steady income to build your life upon.

Now, right or wrong in their calculations, it’s an attempt to contextualize the revenue to actual money in hand. Something I would think is not unreasonable, as it would give a better idea, on what it actually means. It’s not like there could be anything offensive about that…
