Another reason could be thinking it's dumb to rank atrocitities. Because, really what is the purpose here? Surely it would be enough to classify slavery as a crime against humanity.

The slave trade stretched for over 300 years, and even when it 'officially' ended, it still carried on in some places, and the massive racism and othering that went with it lingered for...well even now I guess.

Don't know how it is with other countries education system, but in my country's history books, they showed methods of torture done by slave masters, how slaves were treated etc. When slaves actually were on land and sold it was bad(which our history books went into detail on), but even when they were on ships being transported, even that was horrific.

Like even if we go by 'struggle olympics', I can't see how the holocaust beats it. Like the death tolls, conditions and treatment of peoples and lingering effects across the globe doesn't even seem to come close. There are numerous horrific events in human history, but I just can't see how the Holocaust would top the slave trade on that. And that's not even getting into the economics and plundering aspects of multiple African nations and decimation of native populations that were used as slaves before the slave trade fully kicked in.

But I suppose it is a weird thing to try and quantify in itself.

When you're the country who did one of the most famous atrocities in history less than 100 years ago, going "this other atrocity is the worst thing to ever happen!", can be kind of a bad look - some of its victims are still alive.


Why does something need to "top" the list? How do you go about quantifying it? and if you can quantify it, what gets to be 2nd, 3rd or 4th worst?


The Holocaust was a systematic racial extermination that not only succeeded (it has successfully removed Jews from many countries to this day - and the world Jewish population is still lower than it was before, and I'm sure other communities have likewise been affected), but was done in an industrial scale with pure extermination in mind. A stated part of their campaign was the extermination of Jewish life in Europe (and wherever else they went, as many killing also occurred in North Africa.) In just 4 years, millions were exterminated on a conveyor belt of complete dehumanization.
Is a speed-run of total annihilation worse than 300 years of slavery? No - But I don't think anyone should make this judgement.

Yes, that lasted for 4-5 years and killed over 6 million people.

VS.

The systemic exploitation of peoples that lasted over 300 years, including the death, torture, racial discrimination, rape of said people, affecting not just those peoples but the indigenous populations of multiple countries(which wiped out or significantly reduced entire indigenous populations), while countries where slaves were taken from and to were heavily plundered as well. With a death toll of possibly 10x as much.

The effects of which, not just extend to the African countries, but the Caribbean countries and multiple other countries that the slaves were sent to. And of which multiple countries took part in and no one actually fought against, except the actual slaves, and slave revolts were a bloody, torturous affair when quelled. Very few actually succeeded.

Does that at all seem comparable to you?

That's awesome man. I've still not pulled off that 1v3 feat myself....Actually in any MP game for that matter. It's like getting a Turkey in bowling.

If Bungie needs to add a PvE to keep the doors open, do it. I''d rather be able to play this game a year from now. I'm sure they're discussing a myriad of ways to get this game into more people's hands....The nuclear option is, ofcourse, making the game free to play -- but then you risk more cheaters with alt accounts ruining the entire thing. The $40 was always kind of a small gatekeep on cheating imo.

But for me, when I log on to play Marathon everyday, i don't even think about CCU numbers or this thread or the select 5 or so people who just constantly want to come in and comment (and I've now got all of them on ignore) on how bad things are in this game -- I just enjoy the absolute shit out of the game that Bungie have made. I trust that Bungie knows they have something special here as a base game, but I also trust that they will need to iterate on this thing to get it to a healthy state with the population. We'll see what they do and my new attitude while they're sorting this out is simply, "Let em cook."

I don't want to justify the abstention of most of the European countries but *technically* the trans-Atlantic slave trade can't be THE gravest crime against humanity since there were other slave trades that were as much or even more impactful for the victims' communities.
2 examples from the top of my head:
- The Arab Slave trade: It operated for 13 centuries or more (!) and the total tally of victims was similar if not greater. Unfortunately it's not as visible or known since most of the male victims didn't leave any offsprings and they were expendable while the females were often used as sex slaves or concubines. The later practice was so impactful that nowadays almost all of the Arabic speaking world (in the Middle East and North Africa) of Muslim background has *some* amount of Sub-Saharan admixture connected to it while their pre-Islamic ancestors had, depending on the area, less or none at all.
- The Ottoman slave trade: Of much more localised importance but even then, millions of people of European, Caucasian and African origin were trafficked from the establishment of the Ottoman Empire until the early 20th (!) century.

For those who don't know, Better Than Life is a Total Immersion video game (AKA a AR game on steroids) from the Sci-Fi series Red Dwarf that creates effectively a theme park (well V1 does anyway, V2 slowly kills you by masking itself from your memory and making you think you're in reality) for you based on deepest wishes, wants, desires; and basically just do anything you want. So famous people you want to meet will be there, rides, attractions and activities made just for you; be told we done by that dad you could never please etc.

You start on a sunny beach and drive/ride anyway you want to the grand entrance where you will be taken to your hotel room (which will be made to be perfect for you). The hotel has a restaurant that will serve you your most wanted and loved food. There you can do anything you want.

Are their any cases where it took WAY too long to realize the joke or in some cases, realize their even was a joke or comedic reference happening, even in a comedy work?

I post this because I've just done this with one of my favourite comedies, Red Dwarf, one that was staring me in the face all this time, who the JMC (the Jupiter Mining Corporation) was mocking. For those who's never seen the show, the Red Dwarf (a JMC ship) and JMC products are meant to be low quality and suffer from poor performance and just shoddy products that fail constantly (this is especially obvious in the first season, especially in the unproduced episode Bodysnatcher) and remember that this show was made in the 80s in the UK (and was originally began to be developed in 1983).

I should have figured it out but it took seeing the JMC insignia and seeing it mentioned on the Red Dwarf wiki to realize it; the JMC was mocking the DMC, aka the DeLorean Motor Company (which for those only familiar with the DeLorean through Back to the Future, in the UK, the company and it's products were INFAMOUS for being shoddy and low quality):
