So I just got back home after getting some breakfast with my wife. I had a road rage encounter. I was driving down a small street that runs through some residentials and even a school. A woman walking her dog was crossing the street at an intersection but did not have marked crosswalks. She's almost in the middle of the street, so I decide to stop and let her completely cross. I didn't even have to brake hard, mind you. I hear a honk behind me, I gesture that there's a pedestrian crossing. So we get on our way, guy decides to race past me in the center lane that's reserved for turning and cut me off and brakes hard in front of me. I brake pretty hard to avoid hitting him. He gets out of his car and starts walking to my car throwing racial slurs at me. I'm like, ok, I was like there was a pedestrian. He's like, that's not what you do you fucking [racial slur, racial slur, racial slur]. I'm like, alright let's fucking get going. So he drives off, I'm behind him. We get to a light a couple streets later where I have to make a left and he's stopped at the light, so I pass him to get into the left turn lane. Light eventually turns green when he honks at me to get my attention as he's passing on the passenger side to show me that he typed out the racial slur again on his phone in bold letters to show me. Been awhile since I had this kinda racism hurled at me and I'm usually a pretty chill guy. My wife is going insane, lol. I'm like ok, shrug it off, but now that I'm home, it's kinda sticking with me and reminds me that racists are emboldened these days to just let their flag fly where ever they are. I miss old racism when it was badly hidden, lol.

I moved into my new home about a year ago in an estate - for non-Ireland/UK readers, that's essentially a residential development, something like this:







Shortly after moving in I was invited to join the local WhatsApp group, which I accepted since I didn't know many neighbours yet. It's been fascinating to watch it evolve.



Bob is an admin in the group. Bob is a very active fellow who, as far as I can tell, considers himself the Mayor of the estate. I'm not joking; he's actually labelled himself "Community Representative" in the WhatsApp group, self-elected. Whenever someone raises a problem - anything from water issues to a simple query - Bob is first to respond, usually with some variation of "I have emailed the property developers about your issue". It's not really his place to do that, but since most people are new to the estate, they tend to be grateful. Harmless busybody, I thought.



I had a few problems with the property developers myself. They'd made a mess of something in my home, and when I asked the group if anyone had similar issues, it turned out several people did. Since the developers weren't responding to me, I went legal - I got the local council involved, who then forced the developers to fix the problem. When Bob asked in the group whether I'd spoken to the developers directly, I joked that I didn't have quite the same relationship with them as he did, and confirmed I'd gone legal instead.



To my genuine surprise he completely lost it. He accused me of implying he had an inappropriate relationship with the developers and launched into a three-paragraph rant along the lines of "I'm just a guy, you know?". Several people messaged me privately to say ignore him, it's not the first time where he's come off as a bit unhinged. Apparently he's involved in other local groups - kids' soccer groups etc - and doesn't have the best reputation among at least some people. I calmed things down a bit by clarifying it was a joke and saying I was happy for everyone to handle the developers in their own way. So moving on, all's good.



Until this week.



The latest issue is parking. Lord Mayor Bob proposes that maybe the estate should form an official residents' committee, so they can collectively approach the developers about the lack of spaces. Someone genuinely responded by saying: "That's like a HOA in the US - I hear they're great." I chime in asking whether people really want an association that'll measure grass height and dictate paint colours. Same person replies, in complete seriousness: "We can be flexible on the grass length." Bob calls a vote. Eighty percent are in favour of forming a committee.

That's actually pretty cool, thank you for sharing. I like to do sleight of hand stuff with cards and coins and such so I truly respect the dexterity involved in your trickeration.

Thank you! The professional hobby side of things although pretty niche had a very strong presence in Europe as I grew up before moving to Canada, which is when I learned a lot of what I am still able to do today. Tech Deck is a great entry point into the hobby, but the world of fingerboarding is so so deep and full of history.

In NA, the scene has only grown more and more, with the West Coast in particular being a huge hub for both skateboarding and professional fingerboarding alike.

It's a lot of fun, and you can get as much out of it as you put into it, from a creativity standpoint as well as a social activity. Some of my closest friends I met thanks to this hobby, and although it isn't anywhere near profitable enough for me to live off of, it also taught me a lot about owning a small business.

This small hobby is a huge part of my life aha.

How are protests supposed to fight fascism? Protests only work with a government responsive to the masses? Also why is it called "No Kings" if we're fighting fascism?

But seriously, they feel like the BLM protests where there's not even an agreed upon thing being protested other than "bad things" let alone any sense of what is actually wanted by the protesters.

So I just got back home after getting some breakfast with my wife. I had a road rage encounter. I was driving down a small street that runs through some residentials and even a school. A woman walking her dog was crossing the street at an intersection but did not have marked crosswalks. She's almost in the middle of the street, so I decide to stop and let her completely cross. I didn't even have to brake hard, mind you. I hear a honk behind me, I gesture that there's a pedestrian crossing. So we get on our way, guy decides to race past me in the center lane that's reserved for turning and cut me off and brakes hard in front of me. I brake pretty hard to avoid hitting him. He gets out of his car and starts walking to my car throwing racial slurs at me. I'm like, ok, I was like there was a pedestrian. He's like, that's not what you do you fucking [racial slur, racial slur, racial slur]. I'm like, alright let's fucking get going. So he drives off, I'm behind him. We get to a light a couple streets later where I have to make a left and he's stopped at the light, so I pass him to get into the left turn lane. Light eventually turns green when he honks at me to get my attention as he's passing on the passenger side to show me that he typed out the racial slur again on his phone in bold letters to show me. Been awhile since I had this kinda racism hurled at me and I'm usually a pretty chill guy. My wife is going insane, lol. I'm like ok, shrug it off, but now that I'm home, it's kinda sticking with me and reminds me that racists are emboldened these days to just let their flag fly where ever they are. I miss old racism when it was badly hidden, lol.
