remember when we were finally approaching true artistic freedom, and developers were doing crazy shit like dante's inferno with implied dicks and boobs and vaginas all over the place

it didn't matter if anyone didn't like it, there were a million options without those things, it was understood that you shouldn't buy things you don't expect to enjoy

They're still living in a fantasy world where the majority of female characters are sexualized, somehow ignoring how their own thread is now filled to 90% with japanese/chinese gacha slop to whine about.

And so, when the entire industry is just so ridiculously lopsided across the board like things are now, to the point that the status quo is basically "Men = Heroes; Women = Sex Objects (and maybe also heroes, but *sexy* heroes)," it kinda makes pretty much every instance of female sexualization inherently problematic just by virtue of feeding further into that existing imbalance. And I don't think it *should* be this way, but the reality is what it is.

So, imo, until we reach a point where the rampant sexualization of women is reduced, sexualization as a whole is turned more equal, and "men = heroes; women = sex objects" is no longer the default state of things, it's just not gonna be possible to find an example truly devoid of any issues at all. (And even then, even if we did ever manage to reach that point, sex is such a messy topic that there will undoubtedly always be reasons for someone out there to find depictions of sexualization problematic.)

I had a bit of a discussion recently about Stellar Blade, where I criticised the icert sexualisation and someone took exception.

I said that sexualisation wasn't inherently bad in games, but SB is cringey as all hell and pandering on its purest form.

They asked for examples of non-problematic sexualisation in games.

I'm interested in what examples people might think of? Honestly, most that I can think of aren't great in one way or another, and some of the better ones simply offer reasonably equitable sexualisation of male and female characters.

I think the funniest thing is that there's no Spanish translation, but there's also no French, German, Korean, Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Polish or any other language translation either. The only languages the games are available in are Japanese and English, because those are the only languages the writer speaks, but somehow this makes him an anti-Hispanic crusader whose crimes against Latin American are only rivalled by Hernan Cortes. Imagine if English speakers called every Japanese game that goes untranslated a racist attack. Even worse imagine if Finnish people did the same thing, every game developer under the sun would be a villain.

Nah, at least not in the 80’s and 90’s where they went beyond the U.S. localizations and licensed songs (thought they rewrote lyrics to be able to rhyme  )

Absolutely. Remember that anything you don't like is a failure of the system that controls everything, likely due to malevolent forces aligned against you manipulating it to harm you. The only solution is the complete and total recreation of everything in the image you desire. This is why anyone who shows their whole ass by wanting something different is going mask about how they want you dead. There simply is no choice between your basic survival and the mass conspiracy against you.

I want to mention that yes, LAD is one of the bigger gacha games aimed towards women, but it has a huge problem with bigotry, esp netizens attacking BL artists for drawing BL fanart of the cast. I've def seen it happen on twitter and I swear it's for the dumbest reasons to attack artists for fanart and I know the official devs said No BL art already so just leave other people alone?

It's more of a reflection of the problem in otome games and why it's one of the reasons I quit them because instead of allowing the idea that FeMC can more than just XYZ, it ended up adding even more rigid gender rules and attracted way more homophobia, racism, and transphobia as seen in the Reddit sub as it gained more members over time.

Also, it doesn't feel great to say yes, there are games where you can collect anime men, but only if you're open to gambling and GAAS hell, with full knowledge it will shut down in 3-5 years and then lose everything in the end like what happened with Mr Love: Queen's Choice a few months ago which lasted much longer than I expected.

 

Stuff that we need more for women in games who are also portrayed as sexual characters:
Diverse body shapes and sizes. Skin colours, cis, trans and nonbinary, heights and weights, all of it.
A wider variety of ages - not just early 20-somethings, but women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s... whatever.
Clothes and outfits that are attractive and well-coordinated without just being all cleavage or playing into some kinda fetish (i.e. feet). Give me butch women, give me alternative women, give me high femme women.
Situations and scenarios which are not designed exclusively around the male gaze.
Characters who have power and autonomy in their relationships and choices.
A wide variety of talents, experiences and hobbies, especially those that don't revolve around the character's main role in the story.
You may notice none of those bullet points are really about being sexualized... but these things can all be sexy. Because women who are powerful, confident, diverse and unique are cool and attractive. Not just the narrow 1% band of body types, personalities and presentation styles that are valued predominantly by emotionally stunted men who make and play games.

So insulting devs is okay?
