I have read this section. It quotes 5 historians who believe he is guilty. They believe some details like the number of victims may be exaggerated, but the idea that he might be innocent is described as a conspiracy theory. It quotes a single historian, Jacques Chiffoleau, who says he has doubt about the proceedings but is not trying to argue innocence or guilt - the historian equivalent of "just asking questions."

After reading this section, I fail to find reason why I should doubt the mainstream view of experts on the topic that he was guilty, and I am left confused as to why people are so inclined to rush to this guy's defense. Particularly in light of modern parallels like Epstein and a push towards trusting victims' claims, it seems like much strong counter-evidence ought to be required.

I find the "just asking questions" stick used in this example laughable.

It's the historians job to costantly ask questions and revisit the past.

The other historians quoted in that article consider the questions and then use their expertise to make a judgment based on the balance of the evidence (that he was guilty).

This is the one guy who says "I'm not taking a position on whether he was innocent or guilty." And this is the strongest voice for innocence in that article - someone who won't even commit to an answer.

I'm being a bit harsh, but I do also kind of mean it. The historian is supposed to be the expert, and they should be willing to take a clear position and defend it. Of course "just asking questions" is a culturally loaded way of describing it, but it does boil down to the same thing, which is to avoid taking a position as a means of avoiding criticism.

I always expect the worst from the DNC. Especially if they're feeling emboldened post-Trump disaster. They really want to swoop in and become the new Republican Party so they can salt the earth for their beloved AIPAC and corporate donors.

They want to become a party that's lost three of the last five Presidential elections? And been in the minority in the Senate for six of the last ten terms? And will be the minority in three of the last five House terms?

AOC would be an Obama level run and I can see it after Trump 2. The most lefty candidate is probably taking the nomination by storm after the moderates tried moderating in the "sane" era in response to Trump and it blew up in our faces. Liberal era of the Democrats needs to end sooner than later.

Trump led in the GOP primary polls starting in July 2015 and obtained a +10 point lead by August 2015. He was up 20 points by the end of the year. When he was included in hypothetical polls during his flirting in 2011, he was besting everyone but Romney.

If AOC ran and won the primaries, you would probably see the DNC endorse the Republican candidate. The DNC would endorse any Republican before they support a Progressive.

It's not a rhetorically brilliant move but it is a rhetorically interesting one because of what it says about the person who uses it. You're admitting you can't answer the question but are framing the asker as a bad person for having the gall to challenge you knowing that you can't answer it. They're acting in "bad faith" by shattering the illusion that you are a master of the subject. The subject now shifts from whatever it was to the bad manners and revealed evil morals of the critic.

Yet this somehow works on large swaths of the population apparently.
