I'm not setting an impossible standard. You did, because you made the claim that this technology will absolutely result in a net gain in lives saved across the board. I'm simply asking you to prove it. If you can't, either retract the claim or amend it to just the basic observation that traffic deaths will go down. No need to the capitalists' job for them with grand declarations that this will have utopian impacts on life all across the planet. Like slow down, there; we have to defeat climate change first.

The 44k figure would ostensibly have to include pedestrian collisions and drunk driving crashes, as the figure apparently represents all deaths related to car crashes within a 30 day period. But let's assume it doesn't and add on 7k deaths from pedestrian hits and 13k deaths from drunk driving to the 44k. You're still not at the high end of assumed deaths from lack of healthcare in this country.

My argument is also assuming the best case scenario for Waymo: that the introduction of all self-driving cars in the US would see a total decrease down to 0 deaths from traffic collisions overnight upon implementation in the US (not possible but I'm trying to be charitable). The year over year comparison with lack of health insurance would be variable depending upon availability of insurance during any given Presidential administration, quality of insurance, any major health crises (like another pandemic), etc.. Some years would be a net positive or net negative; I'll give you that. However, given that we've just had a rollback on ACA subsidies which means an increase in people dropping from health insurance (that's me! I'm in that category, woo!) and a decrease in quality of insurance off the board, given the unemployment crisis happening now, its compounding effects on other issues such as housing affordability, food availability, etc., and the fact that the AI bros are super-fucking gung-ho on mass displacement with no real off-ramp or safety net in sight, I expect in the coming years from now for there to be more deaths from lack of access to healthcare alone than what you could offset even if you could Thanos snap every car in the US to turn it into a self-driving one right now.

But I can't see too far in the future. Who knows; maybe there will be some breaking point somewhere (those gas prices getting spicy) and Americans will finally psychologically begin to realize that we have the ability as thinking, sapient human beings to have an impact on the material world due to their physical actions and start organizing for a world where we can have self-driving cars and lack of death due to lack of access to the resources necessary to sustain life. Maybe. I dunno.

All I'm saying is a few of you are making large claims when it's not necessary. =P
