I remember back in 2009 I was on a holiday with a friend and their family at their family caravan.

The parents made cheeseburgers for dinner. I asked if they had ketchup.

They didn't. No big deal, didn't make a fuss about it, I ate and enjoyed the burgers anyway.

But apparently the fact I asked was absolute heresy. Completely disgusting and rude behaviour. They literally never forgave me, even the parents. Friendship over.

I wish there was more to it than that, but that's genuinely it. They didn't tell me they were pissed right away, but when they drove me home my friend told me to never contact them again, and when I asked what the hell is happening, he said I should never have asked for ketchup.

I remember one time, one of my very close friends skipped my birthday party and then told me "if you knew why, you'd understand", and then refused to elaborate when I asked them to tell me why.

Like at that point it's just clear you don't give a shit about salvaging the relationship.

I dunno about the rest of y'all, but when I was 13 I was bullied mercilessly by a bunch of other teenagers, and there is no group of people I feel less inclined to take life lessons from than middle schoolers and high school students. Kids have just as much capacity to be rotten and evil (and in some cases more capacity, since they aren't mature enough to understand the long-lasting implications OF that evil) as adults, so the endless "only the YOUTH are PURE enough to SAVE US" preaching already made me want to scream when I was a teenager.
