I think in a lot of the understandable despair of this thread, what is missing is the historical and political context underpinning the occurrence of this level of heinousness, which would allow people to think of this less as just an evil affect of human nature or a mistake of the Internet and more like an addressable problem with a solution wherein we can materially fight for the liberation of women.

I think the Mario Galaxy movie succeeds where most Hollywood animated movies fail. Galaxy isn't afraid to be a dumb, fun, roller coaster ride emulating an experience you can only get in the games, but on the big screen. It's also unashamedly Mario in every way. Something the first movie failed at, imo.

Every other animated movie is the same tired plot structure, same tired themes, same tired jokes, etc. Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, Illumination, Sony, they're all basically the same. It's just some of them are more successful at the formula than others. But they do all follow the same "family movie" formula. Maybe on paper Galaxy isn't better than a lot of it's contemporaries, but it's different enough, and honest enough about what it's trying to be, that I was far more entertained than most other animated movies.

I think a good example of what I'm trying to convey is this. Every other studio would have had some kind of redemption or introspection from Bowser, culminating in a touching moment between him and Bowser Jr, or at least him and the Mario crew. But no, the games have you fight Bowser and throw him in lava so that's what we're doing in the movie. I really don't need to see another animated movie with surface level themes and formulaic arcs. Until there's a huge paradigm shift in the industry, just give me the spectacle.

Though I should say, the spectacle in this case only works because of it's history in the gaming medium, and it being an IP with deep roots. It probably doesn't work outside of that context, hence the critical response.
