Since this thread got bumped anyway (have not been Pragmata so the above has been a bit of a trip to read), I might well post something I've said to my friends that's been bothering as of late and had nowhere else to post this besides making a thread (and I didn't really want to do that), sometimes I worry the way we discuss Chuds can end up giving them what they want, attention and can lead to creating more toxicity and stopping healthy discussions and stops us focusing our energies on the real factors behind the chuds.



I feel left and progressive spaces can often end platforming right wing chuds in an attempt to dunk them and often giving the chuds exactly what they wanted, attention. One of the more obvious and thankfully people are more savvy about is "debating" chuds. Why are you bothering to "debate" with someone who has made it clear (because their grifters and make profit from it) they aren't there to be persuaded and no about of dunking is going to change their minds? Owning them does nothing as I'll say later because what they're saying doesn't matter to them. It does nothing but platform them and give their hateful rhetoric look more legitimate. It's same reason it pisses me off when New orgs like the BBC in the name of "balance" platform Anti-Science and Anti-Vax shits like they have any authority or foundation compared to the 1000 of Scientists who know what their fucking talking about; don't give them that platform to peddle their shit.



Speaking of their rhetoric, Focusing so much on the chud's "critiques" and dunking each specific point feels so pointless. Again it feels like giving these people too much attention because it doesn't actually matter. Chud grifters will say ANYTHING no matter how nonsensical it is about a show or film because their there to fuel their culture war and drives revenue, anything and everything will be used and the aren't above being hypocritical or pure lying and fueling drama. The chud's don't care if it's accurate or even makes sense, they're there for the drama, they're there to push their rhetoric. Trying to debunk their nonsense only gives it more legitimacy and gives them more opportunities to platform their hateful rhetoric.



I also feel like there is a mentality of giving chuds WAY too much credit, especially when it comes to works getting cancelled like I've seen with Acylote and most recently Star Trek Acadamy. This often gets used against non-Chuds criticizing a work under the mentality of "If you ever criticized X work you're the reason it got cancelled/sold poorly/reviewed badly etc and are not better then the chuds." which just makes any form of discussion toxic. All you're doing is making the chud's rhetoric look like it has power and more legitimate then it has or should have. This is the thing, they don't really have that power, if the Execs are listening to these opinions, it's because they already AGREED with them, something that should be obvious with the case of STA.



I also feel this mentality can unwittingly allow Chuds to control the narrative because of this US vs Them rhetoric where they can warp a complex discussion in a black and white one, isolating people on the left. This felt like it happened to me (back before I realized I was a lesbian) on this thread when the chuds were complaining about romance options in Dragon Age Veilguard when it was revealed Bioware was choosing to have all the companions be Pansexual which leds to some to act like any who thought playersexual/all pan wasn't the best choice for romance in RPGs was a chud. This, as someone who has spent years for advocating for lesbian and gay men to be allowed to be companions and romancable (and have their stories told), that no sexuality should be barred from any role and that games should stop focusing rep solely on it benefiting the player (DA:V is better in the regard since the companions do have their own love lives outside of the player and are explicitly pan which is good rep for them), REALLY rubbed me the wrong way and I exploded back then. Same with the discussion of historical accuracy in media where people on the left knee jerk and say it doesn't matter in response of chuds warping that discussion to complain about black people being in a film when again, there is a lot of nuance there that gets dismissed and important discussion of how history can get warp, often by conservative media to support their views (See FD Signifier video 'Black conservatism isn't what you think' that delves into this discussion with how conservative media has done this to the US Civil Rights leaders to warp and change their views, history and believes to fit their purpose)



Not only that, but I feel this type thing can also end up attacking women. I've discussed this more elsewhere on ERA but there are few women users on ERA I highly respect and think are great who enjoyed or loved Stellar Blade for gameplay reason or found the interactions between the women sweet which I also understand and honestly reminds me why I tolerated DOA's objectification for as long as I did because the gameplay was fun and the interactions between the women were genuinely fun and sweet (Mila and Tina especially in DOA5). I feel like that's a common experience for many women, especially in gaming and other similar hobbies (I've defiantly seen it with women fans of Shonen Anime do this) to find things they love in works not made for us or guilty of sexism, heavy sexualization and objectification, we sometimes we take what we can get. I don't begrudge any woman who genuinely finds something to love about these works, I wouldn't want to be shamed for my love of fighting games, I don't even begrudge women fans who do find Eve from Stellar Blade sexy, more power to them and it's unfair to imply there just as bad as chuds who hate their guts because they happen to like a piece of media the chuds fought for (and turned against because again, they don't actually care beside how much they can grift it for their culture wars).



And lastly there is the issue of giving Chuds more attention then needed. This thread has been really guilty of this and I'll fully admit I'm guilty of this as well, where someone will just upload a tweet or image of some no name chud with like 5 followers and go "Look look how awful this is!" and like okay... Why are we broadcasting this person, why are we giving them an audience, why are we platforming them even if it's just to mock them? Same with going on and on about all the unrelated dramas these big chud grifters get into, why give them more attention when we know it's attention they seek? Why should I care what some chud's opinion on X game is?



For me, it doesn't matter much trying to "own" these people because they do not care and their are many more of them. The focus shouldn't be on the chuds, turning them into morbid celebrities, we should treat them like we do serial killers and give them as little attention as possible to stop them getting what they crave. Our focus should be on:

Their victims, helping and support the victims of their harassment and abuse.
There crimes and the reasons why it's happening rather then focusing on the chuds themselves.
The system that allows these chuds to HAVE both a platform and an incentive to do their awful things. These chuds only have any power because the right wing shits who run and owns these platforms GIVE them power along with people like Trump who benefit from them (though as we've seen recently, is happy to throw them to side) and they are the people we need to fight, deplatform and make sure can't have that power again. The problem with taking down one of these shits is that another takes their place like a Hydra because their culture wars is a business, none of them care for the other. To be clear, I'm not saying ignore them because that is also VERY bad, the "Just ignore them and they'll get bored" is a myth and also bad for their victims, we don't improve anything if we ignore the issue. Again, for context even examples is fine, but like what happened in this thread where it felt like we treated like we followed them with everything did gave too much on the individual chuds and giving them too much attention rather then focusing on the wider issues involved with them. I really hope I'm making sense because I don't want people to stop caring about online harassment or the issues with these chuds, This is frustrating how to word this right.



One last thing and this goes into how Influencers on YouTube and Nebula discuss these chuds, where they'll include footage of right wingers and chuds being awful for long periods of time to make a point and/to deliberately make the viewers uncomfortable/or as evidence for the wider point of the video. I get it makes sense to give context and some video is needed, but so often it feels they post too much of their rhetoric that it sometimes feels like their just rebroadcasting it. As a trans woman, I don't WANT to see this awful shit, it's really triggering and I wish progressive YouTubers would stop reposting transphobic shit (often with minimal commentary or cutaways during it). I wish YouTuber and Nebula Progressive influencers would at least put time stamps or trigger warning for areas in their videos that are just reposting right wing hate rhetoric because I WANT to support them, especially other Trans people like Jessie Gender. I actively avoid chud spaces, I'm completely off Twitter, I have Subreddits blocked and it's one of the reasons why I barely post on the JKRowling thread on ERA because I was sick of seeing her awful rhetoric because it just makes me feel tired, miserable, full of anxiety and hopelessness. I have literal neighbours who are openly hateful, I see this shit on TV, I see and hear horror stories, I hate having to stay in the closet out of fear, I don't need to see more of it. It's why it's so frustrating that progressive YouTubers then reguritate their hate on their videos, sometimes minutes on end, like constantly reminding me people hate me is what's good for me. It's frustrating, especially when their multi-hour videos which makes skipping without missing stuff a pain in the ass. I wish there was other ways to discuss chuds without needing to reupload as much of their hate outright.

On nights where I have to work in the morning, never nights when I don't and never for naps, when I start to fall asleep and my mind begins to drift off (I kinda quasi hallucinate when falling asleep, usually not aware of it but this situation has made me very aware of it) I stop breathing automatically. I'm aware enough that I notice so I resume my breathing manually, but I can't sleep while manual breathing.

Eventually I get bored and tired enough that I knock out before I can notice it happen.

Anyone experience anything like this?
