It's not just journalists. Somebody wrote to my employer and complained my posts on ResetEra about Marathon were negative. I got called into a meeting and had to explain what ResetEra is, what Marathon is, what I'd posted and basically assess the risk. I don't know if anybody has ever talked about ResetEra in a corporate setting up it was funniest thing I've ever done in life. My Marathon collector's edition was sat right behind my desk during the Zoom call so it wasn't like I could be like "...Mara what? ResetUhrah?".

Respectfully, their description seems a little less reductive than calling blatantly inappropriate things "vaguely inappropriate". The dev designed a game where you can invade a woman's space and touch her and she repeatedly makes it clear she doesn't want you to do those things to her.

Agree to disagree. I feel that boiling an entire 10hr solo-dev action platformer to a handful of (admittedly creepy) optional interludes to be more reductive, personally.

The dev literally made videos showing off the creepy shit. Optional it may be, but they wanted it to be seen.

It's gross and I dislike it, but from what I've seen it's about as severe as half of Era's favourite animes.

And those deserve to be criticized as well.

As someone who followed the dev of the game for a long time, it really was gross to see the shift in how the game was shown off. Massively agree with the steam review quoted above.

The dev could have just, you know, not put it in. They chose to release it like that, so they are volunteering to be judged. No one forced them.

A foolproof way to make sure conversations about a game don't consistently shift to talking about the pervy shit in it is to not include pervy shit in it.

Yeah but...people can only race in to make that post because the dev chose to have their game do that. Some things leave a very strong impression. what's the old joke? "I've fought and defeated every warrior I've met, bested others in feats of strength, braved trials no others could face, but I fuck one goat, and guess what everyone remembers?"

And I probably can't stand most anime Era would recommend due to creepy shit, so, uh, happy to criticize that? I don't seek it out though because I think it's garbage. And this thread is about this game, not anime.

I took this off my wishlist bc of the weird shit the dev included.

Obviously I'm out of step with Era on this one, cos based on my experience of playing the demo and taking in some reviews, the slimy stuff feels more like a regrettable blemish on what is otherwise a pretty good game, rather than the only thing about the game worth talking about, or a sin so vast that it renders everything else moot.

Or maybe I'm just bummed that a rare piece of good industry news has turned sour.

The feet stuff is pretty cringe, but the pearl clutching is so goddamn obnoxious. From what I gather so far, it's like 1% of the fucking game.
