Apologies from the development team
It was brought to our attention that one of the screenshots of our forum portion of the game contained one of our mini game popups that unfortunately had a string of 4 characters that very closely resembled "leet speak" for a slur. We apologize for this oversight. The game was designed to choose a random string of 4 characters from a pool of 30, however we have added a "no fly" pool of leet speak and common 4 letter strings that could be interpreted as something offensive. We have now removed the screenshot (#4) in question and replaced it.

Again, we apologize for the unprofessionalism. Hopefully this completely negates the possibility of anything similar ever occuring during play.

there was a lot of talk at the time about video game button references, start button, press restart, play again

they wanted to get a site up quickly because everyone was just waiting to move to something, I think there were even a few false start competitors or alternate plans like invading waypoint forums as a new home (they said hell no)

ultimately it was just "reset, like a console's reset button, but also we're resetting the community, it's got so many meanings it's so deep"

I have no firsthand knowledge of the Horizon multiplayer game because everyone who touched it is under NDA, but if I were hypothetically imagining what it might feel like to play, I’d probably picture something with weird floaty movement (which in turn makes for clunky platforming), uninteresting enemies, an overall tone that is neither serious nor whimsical, and playable characters whose movesets and progression systems (at least in beta state) don’t really feel compelling yet. 

I'd imagine it being somewhat like Elden Ring: Nightreign but much worse.

I know some people are like this with cars, furniture, etc. It makes sense as the markdown is so drastic at times.

I'm like this with most furniture. The issue is that it can be a slog, going through Marketplace listing, flaky sellers, and so on. So I do get new furniture when I don't want to spin my wheels on things. Also, depends on the item as well.

The other is camera equipment. I'm a hobby photographer and you save so much money going used. Most dedicated camera shops like B&H also sell used stock if you don't want to deal with personal sellers.

I think that's mostly it for me.

That reminds me of one thing that keeps surprising me. I've seen and even reported posts over time that are absolutely just open hostility, insults, etc... but it seems to get a pass, and those who do get banned for actual hostility often seem to stop just short of a perma-ban even if I've seen 'em be banned like two or three times and never change their behaviour. It's to where I wonder if the reporting/ban system is dysfunctional or overloaded and things get missed, or if certain people are just immune somehow. It's weird, especially when some catch bans for much less.



I've always had a theory as well that if on any site you allow a certain level of passive aggression, meanness, hostility, etc between users... it'll inevitably boil over and insufficient moderation of toxic attitudes/personalities will be the cause of the big blowups that require a bunch of bans at once. And it only gets sillier when that isn't being tackled, but far more minor things do get cracked down upon so harshly.

Even if you feel it was a harmless joke, the rules clearly state that threads made to mock or parody another thread are explicitly prohibited.



If you make a thread that is a parody or joke in a very general sense, precedent seems to indicate that you are fine; lots of weekend era threads are this. However, the kind of individualized, targeted lampoon that we see here is very clearly and obviously a violation.



Is this a good rule? Well maybe that's something for people to discuss in this thread. It would certainly be more productive than "this ban is unwarranted" type discourse because the basic contract of the forum is that you follow the rules or you eat a warning or ban. The rules aren't particularly ambiguous here, so maybe a chat about the rule itself is in order if folks believe that things should be different.

Honestly, if things were more consistent I don't think it'd be as big of a deal, or at least I suspect so. Rules around not bullying or attacking other users are great, but I think it starts to seem odd to people when a lot of the time some are allowed to run around at each-other's throats and being hostile, and the enforcement seems oddly selective and often targets much lower intensity gags where open hostility is often pretty unchecked.



That's my take, at least. If it was consistent and the effort was made to set a positive forum culture from the top-down was taken, this ban would make total sense. As it is, the culture set from the top seems a bit aggressive itself, and there are too many cases for me to count of aggression being permitted or at least unactioned in the forums. That's been my experience, at least.

i think it ultimately rides the line, but personally dont think it went over it considering the subject was Marriott. If it was something more personal like "my wife left me" or whatever, then yea that crosses the line.

I think realistically we do not see the kind of violation that this thread involves very often, so while it may be that sometimes people get away with being rude or mean when they shouldn't, I don't really see people violating the "no parodies" rule frequently at all.



What confused me was that the specific rule violation wasn't cited in the moderation notice. I think the rule is so infrequently invoked that many users might not even know it exists.

You misunderstand what I'm getting at, I'm talking about the overarching spirit of the law regarding various rules to avoid insults and hostility among users, so to speak, as well as speaking to the general topic of moderating against the mocking or insulting of other users rather than only an overly-specific discussion on rules around spoofing in particular. And that it's very silly and has a poor effect when more minor incidents are met with such harsh bans but a culture of aggression and hostility is in so many cases permitted in the average posts and interactions.



That said I do agree on the whole issue of people not even knowing a rule exists. I don't think they even have a truly complete rule list at this point, do they, or has that changed? I remember very frequently seeing ban reasons that were not explained or contained anywhere when I went looking for the list of forum guidelines.

Well yeah being mean should be moderated more consistently. We have mods that are themselves rude to users on the regular. It's not like there's an objective yardstick of meanness or rudeness though. Is telling somebody they're an idiot in a thread more or less mean than making a whole thread to parody them? Is the thread more or less mean than calling somebody a banned slur? Is making a minor joke that happens to land wrong and really upset somebody worse than a joke that reads as really cruel but the target laughs it off and keeps going in a cheerful manner? 



My sense is that the mods are overwhelmed by the volume of reports, because reports tend to not ever get a response positive or negative even when they result in action. IMO it should absolutely be a mandatory part of the ticket workflow, but I doubt it will be because it'd be even more work. Maybe they need more mods. Who knows.

I know what you mean by there not being a real true objective measure, but there is a common-sense line that seems to be not followed on the regular is what I'm saying. When I see stuff like calling someone else 'fucking pathetic' for no good reason in an innocuous discussion about a piece of media, and not even that gets actioned upon report, that plus as you say rudeness from some mods, it just gets one a bit jaded. And that's the kinda stuff that I am referring to when I say I think the current backlash can probably be explained and understood at least in part by people having lots of worse incidents in their memory that never got actioned, as well as the seeming disinterest in promoting a genuinely healthy culture, whilst something such as this more minor kerfuffle ended with a long ban. I figure that's got to contribute to the uproar at least a little bit, if we want to understand why it became a huge deal.

I'm still disturbed by how often posters in this thread, who on average probably have more buyin on how the forum "should be" run, are advocating that being an asshole is okay if it drives away anyone who isn't 110% aligned with their views on an issue.
