I'm gonna be honest, I don't mind Luke's portrayal anymore. Like at first I had a rough time coming to terms with it, but after watching TLJ in theaters like 10 times for real xD, I soon kinda got what Rian was going for with it. Not really the direction I would have gone with but I do see the sense in seeing someone become like that after such a colossal failure, a failure that he helped sow by drawing his saber on his nephew.

Would Luke truly have done that? It depends on who you ask. I know maybe balked at someone who is meant to be a paragon of virtue do such a thing. But this is Luke. He was always prone to outbursts when it came to his loved ones. For and against. He went absolutely ballistic on his own father when he threatened to turn Leia to the dark side. So I do see that despite all those years, he would still have a moment of weakness when it comes to acting rashly against his family. The difference was that he at least realized his mistake practically immediately, but unfortunately Ben had seen that moment as a threat.

But the rest I still don't agree with. I tolerate TLJ and applaud it for being so beautiful and cinematic, but I did not like the direction that Finn and others took.

(a) REQUIREMENT.—As a condition of receiving funds under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 6301 et seq.), a public school that receives funds under such Act shall obtain parental consent before changing a covered student's—
(1) gender markers, pronouns, or preferred name on any school form; or
(2) sex-based accommodations, including locker rooms or bathrooms.

 Why is this a bad thing? Shouldn't this be a requirement. Parents need to provided written consent for a high schooler to join ROTC, shouldn't they also be allowed to know their child may be suffering from gender dysphoria so they can seek out treatment from medical professionals? Public schools only care about enforcing the government (nazi) will and quotas for funding, they're the worst people to deal with these things.

They'd rather deal with bullying or worse in house so they don't risk their precocious funding and won't notify parents of that either.

This is my half-assed reading of it, but abortion really changed the progressive tune on parental consent on medical procedures. Oh sure, most of them still do, but abortion politics set the precedent that not all major/life changing procedures need parental consent. Not just in the eyes of the left, but many courts as well.

The basis on it was sound (parent abusing their child), but the execution was of course very different, as of much what happened with abortion. In this case, the basis is, ‘I as a pre-puberty teen or younger even, know myself as a well enough to be the wrong gender and enact life-altering decisions without any say from my parents’.

I'm going to be honest here, it frustrates me that "smooth brain" is actionable for ableism, but I've seen a lot of unchecked ableism here over the years that never gets actioned (and yes, I've usually reported it). To be honest, outside of this forum, I've never seen the term "smooth brain" considered to be a slur, and only really used in jokey contexts (similar to what [USER=127023]Jubilant Duck[/USER] described above). That's not me disputing whether it is or isn't a slur, it just isn't something I've ever come across before, despite hanging out in communities with disabled folk, and having a disability myself, so honestly I am a bit surprised it's somehow something I've never encountered.

Anyway, it's just disheartening witnessing the most obvious cases of ableism/slurs get actioned, but a lot that's still often fairly blatant but maybe not quite surface level is left alone more often than not (definitely not going to say I NEVER see ableism beyond "smooth brain" actioned, it's just a lot rarer. And sometimes the warning/ban reason given doesn't even mention ableism).

I don't expect anything to come of this post, but this being brought up just reminded me of how it's something that's long irked me. And to be clear, I don't think it's anything actively malicious on part of the mod team or anything, I assume a lot of people just simply don't "get" or recognise it unless you've been on the receiving end of casual ableism.

I can sort of understand banning the "R-word" because people of low intelligence through no fault of their own were historically called regards.
But "smooth brain"? Is this even a real medical condition?
Why aren't they banning people for using terms such as "idiot" or "moron", or any terms attacking someone's level of intelligence?
