There are a few ableist terms I commonly see / hear around the Internet that honestly, I think many people just don't know are ableist. Whenever I see people use them here, I just DM them, say "Hey, you know that term is ableist / people have gotten banned for that before / etc." and they always apologize, say they didn't know, and edit their post. (Except for one person who replied that they weren't using it in an ableist way and didn't edit it...)

That said, personally I don't like reporting people unless it's something particularly egregious. I've only reported people to be actioned on once, for hostility. They both rightfully got banned, and then I felt bad, lol. I was never a person who gained satisfaction from seeing others get in trouble.

But it makes me wonder if people are overall too quick to press the "report" button to make a problem go away, instead of talking to others, especially for things where people might simply just be ignorant. Of course, reporting things is important since mods aren't everywhere, but I feel like there are several instances where a problem can be more quickly and better solved by the community without the emotional stress of a ban.
