Like I'm certainly not looking to argue with someone who DOES think it's a slur or anything like that, I just kinda want to be educated.

I think it's just the implication of any sort of brain deficiency rather than a specific disease, but I guess I could be wrong if there is a disease that is specifically being referred to.

It's referring to a congenital brain misformation called Lissencephaly. A normal brain has folds. The brain of someone suffering from Lissencephaly does not. Expecting people to know this and banning them for not seems really excessive.

I get how you'd reach the conclussion but with all context surrounding the meme it really feels like a stretch to say thats ever been its intended use case.

I'd honestly always assumed it was a term adopted because people who wanted to use the R word could not do so any longer without being rightly shunned (despite that word creeping back into usage by scumbags and people who never wanted to stop saying it). I'm surprised the mod action regarding it is getting this much pushback.

Yeah the problem to me isn't the term itself, its more that people will find ways to use insults against intelligence or mental capabilities in a way that just bothers me and rings alarm bells. Ableism is one of those issues that is just straight up not taken seriously, and this forum definitely is not free from that.

Instead of focusing on this specific word and discussing whether or not its a slur, try to think about the way it is used, who you're trying to insult with it and why it is meant to be insulting.

It seems everyone in the thread is confused about it, and like I assume most of this board, I don't actively enter hangouts unless I'm following a topic, and it was a fun thread to dip into and read from time to time when I saw it pop up in etcetera?

Some OT’s hang around as general resources so they’re easier to find and discover. Regular updates are a big part of that. Stuff tends to die in hangouts without dedicated communities and it’s not great for threads focused on discoverability. 

Also folks don’t realize the search bar defaults to this forum or this thread depending on where you are and literally can’t find stuff when it leaves a forum.

I’m wondering if there has just been a general change in policy regarding AI threads that necessitated moving the OT to hangouts? I was surprised that the anthropic profitability thread - presented with sketchy evidence - has been allowed to hang on the front page of etc for two days. That seems like a clear example of a thread that would not have been allowed a few months ago.

I reported that thread and I am very curious as well, especially since it's from a frequent member of the AI positivity containment bunker.

i also reported the thread, with information from the article linked in the op that spells out that there are no actual numbers and is otherwise just a puff piece, but never heard back despite multiple staff members replying to the thread

It did effectively become a negative AI news OT. I don't see it as any different from the stock market or many other OTs in hang outs. Big enough new stories should get a new thread in Etc anyway. 

The topic was brought up a few times in this thread and I don’t think staff ever replied, it was just moved one day. So that’s weird 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's from the perspective of a woman's experience so the bias is towards "why this status quo being upended (not being approached in this scenario) is not good for us." I will say something that I wouldn't be surprised if it got some blowback, but I'll go ahead anyway:

When it comes to dating, in particular, women want to have 2026 privileges but then want men to court and treat them like it's the nineteenth century, but only the parts they like, of course. This is one place where antiquated social norms get pushed hard and women do so just as much as men if not even more. The burden of initial approach just isn't something that most people want if we're being honest, and if I were the gender that benefited from the current standards I'd absolutely just...benefit from it as much as possible heh, understandable.
