The streamer has been criticised for comments he made on an episode of Pod Save America, where Piker said he would "vote for Hamas over Israel every single time". In the UK, Hamas is proscribed as a terrorist organisation and showing support for it is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

So Resident Evil 5 was infamous due to the controversey regarding how Africa was portrayed. Well this quote from the art director shows the mindset of the game and pretty much answers the issues of the racism issue.

"The reference photos we had of the African cities were so modern that I was a bit concerned that it wouldn't really look like Africa at all if we went with the photographs. (laughs) After much discussion, along with trial and error, we eventually shaped the stage to look more like the image that we think people have in their minds when they think of Africa." How is this racist?

It's at best, a poor generalization about the entire continent. But it's incredibly easy to find African cities that look like they wanted and he's really just saying that he wanted a more generic feeling "African" environment. That's not racism.

I suspect they watched Black Hawk Down a lot and wanted it to feel like that. One of the first things to happen in that game is a helicopter crashing and having to reach the wreckage.

I think the critique against the setting being a more generic fictional setting loses a lot of its power when so many games (and media) depict rather generic locations, even when they claim to be a real place, but rarely get dinged for this. Let alone accused of racism for doing it. Like this doesn't even get done for all the games that depict Middle Eastern/Muslim locations like this. (Or most any Global South location.) Yet Era seems to mostly single out and treat Resident Evil 5 as this amazing exception that reveals something or other.

They don't care about Call of Duty so they barely even think about how it has depicted locations over the years despite it being a far bigger part of gaming. The Modern Warfare branch alone might as well take place in MiddleEastistan and EasternEuropearia.

The Resident Evil 5 racism charge is really like a precursor to how they do everything. Capcom's like "it's an unique environment nobody else had done before." And then they go "oh, so you're saying that Black people are monsters or animals, that Black people are dangerous, that Black people are inferiors who should be slaves again, that colonization was a wonderful thing, that white saviors are needed, that really we need to just gun down as many Black people as possible before the infection of their too much melanin kills us all, etc."

And it's like... you're the one reading all of that into it. And deciding that's the subtext of their choices. And that it's not just subtext but the whole text and there's literally nothing else to it. Then if you question this delusional shit that's entirely personal to the mentally ill person screaming about it you're hit with dismissing concerns of racism, colonialism, etc.

The thing is, can understand being offended by a narrow and stereotypical interpretation of Africa but at the same time Resident Evil 4 arguably had a similar depiction of Europe with evil peasant villagers and a FULLY INTACT CASTLE WITH CATAPULTS. Like that's not rural Spain either. 

It's just the kind of pulp horror Resident evil is.

I have no issue with RE5. Hell i love it. Love that it's Africa. I understand the racism complaints, and some of the imagery is off. They could have done more than just use the stereotypical parts of Africa. They sure as shit could have picked an African city to do stuff in, too. Africa has unique architecture in multiple countries (https://www.reddit.com/r/AfricanArchitecture/) that would have worked well with the game. 

Some of the tribal shit is uhh... I think they just wanted to put stuff like that in the game because it looked cool and unique to the game, not because they were trying to be racist, like Era thinks.

Also, there's something that Capcom did in RE4 that they didn't do in 5. In RE4 credits, they showed the Spaniards before the infection as normal people. They never did that in re5 at all, and it would have been a good addition.

I'm glad it exists and really hope it gets a remake. There's so much they can do with Sheva being new to bioterrorism and Chris coming in as the expert he is on it. A prologue chapter showing how the infection started would go a long way too.

Yeah I wouldn't mind at all if the remake is a bit more sensitive in certain areas or simply provides additional context, the RE4 remake did that already too. With Restera it just appears to be that they already draw the line at Chris Redfield Shooting African zombies so I'm not sure what could even please them
