I mean, a lot of women like being attractive and sexy, and feel it's empowering and fun, whether that's in videogames or real life. I know tons of women who love "problematic" and male-gazey character designs. Really there's nothing wrong with fantasy escapism, and that includes sexualized character designs. The harms are more about how it affects people's perceptions of actual women in the real world, and how that contributes to their treatment by men, systems and institutions.



I personally still think Stellar Blade is gross and gratuitous (to speak nothing of the character's face), but like, it doesn't surprise me at all that a lot of women see a cool strong pretty woman kicking a bunch of ass and are into it. Let's not act like all women need to be a monolith as far as what types of representation they like in media, or can't have nuanced, complex or contradictory opinions about sexualized characters.

To add to this, the issue isn't that she's female, the issue is that she's a child.

Correct, and that part is concerning. But also probably says a lot about beauty standards and expectations in media that a lot of people (both men and women) didn't immediately flag it either. Unless we want to start accusing all the women who were into the game of being pedos too, which is.

in the grand tradition of gaf and era, game OTs are celebrated events that take hundreds of hours to put together full of massive gifs and walls of text (56k warning!)

cac chamber signed up to be the official OT creator for cyberpunk, a prestigious honor which as a total shill for the game he took very seriously

however as we know, cyberpunk is unabashedly transphobic, what with its pr guy who made an attack helicopter joke (the fact he was fired doesn't absolve the company) and its "mix it up" chromanticore in-game ad featuring a woman with what looks like a penis (the LGBT creator who designed it does not speak for all LGBT people)

in spite of months of abuse toward him, cac chamber was always polite, welcoming and kowtowing towards those who wanted his OT shut down, he agreed it should be closed in honor of trans remembrance day and did the dance required of him to show respect for era's outraged communities



finally, the other day people demanded to know whether his OT would feature a statement from the trans members of the site to reinforce that this game was only allowed discussion under protest, and he kept repeating that everyone would be welcome to the thread 💯, though not stating plainly that a statement would be included (it would be, he was already working with the mods on it)

mods defended him, and his politeness and welcoming nature only upset them further

he proposed on his own that he would take a one month ban in order to placate those who were upset...mods didn't want to ban him as he hadn't broken any rules, but he insisted!  which only made them hate him further, as he could just play the game in peace and enjoy it on with the cyberpunk discord, they wouldn't be able to make him flail while he was gone

they dug and kept digging, posting completely reasonable pms he had made, trying to get him got

finally they found a 2-year-old tweet that appeared to be maga-ish, at which point the house of cards tumbled, everyone disavowed him, b-dubs (he of the 5-year-old racist gaf posts) perma'd him and said they would be taking over the OT and was shocked and mortified at what had happened and they would be carefully moderating all discussion of cyberpunk

and now era is rapidly eating itself and witch hunting everyone who looks at them sideways, it's open season on digging up old and off-site bad behavior


 
oh and also kyuuji who spearheads the transphobia lynch mob maneuvered her outrage into a free key of the game, so she will be playing it "just to check out all the transphobia," having played era like a damn fiddle

after all this, Black Chamber did a post-banning post-mortem lap of a few forums (archive), saying hi to those who had been watching events unfold

while eager to stretch his legs out and speak freely for once, it turned out he was of course not guilty of any of the things he'd been accused of, and was in fact just a guy who was really looking forward to cyberpunk, and willing to do whatever was asked of him to design the OT and discuss the game on a video game forum

 

if he was some spook mastermind, now would be the time to go mask off and reveal his evil trolling and get slapped on the back by his chud buddies, but he was just a (frustrated) fan
