That logic makes sense for "game I am uninterested in or dislike". It makes less sense for "game that I think openly sexualizes minors".

This Ninty Direct was pretty ass compared to the other gaming shows. Just a whole bunch of ports and little in the way of gameplay or release dates for the actually interesting stuff. Their biggest game, the Ocarina of Time remake, got no gameplay shown despite it supposedly releasing this year which was a very mind boggling decision. It was such a weird presentation for Nintendo to put out considering software sales are slow right now AND they just increased the system price so you'd think there would be some urgency to pull back the curtain on their games by nope, more secrecy.

I know tons of women who love "problematic" and male-gazey character designs. Really there's nothing wrong with fantasy escapism, and that includes sexualized character designs. The harms are more about how it affects people's perceptions of actual women in the real world, and how that contributes to their treatment by men, systems and institutions.
I personally still think Stellar Blade is gross and gratuitous (to speak nothing of the character's face), but like, it doesn't surprise me at all that a lot of women see a cool strong pretty woman kicking a bunch of ass and are into it. Let's not act like all women need to be a monolith as far as what types of representation they like in media, or can't have nuanced, complex or contradictory opinions about sexualized characters.

I think you and others are reading way to much into my and the other comments. There is no shaming liking these character designs. I do think making it sound that men liking them is totally a bad thing (perverts, male-gaze) and when women like them its empowering. Are these character designs now problematic or not? (not talking about that underage stuff right now). Maybe women deserve these double standards in this patriatchy and years and years of male dominated society. I welcome it. In any case, I watched several compilations and standalone videos and shorts of male and female streamers and was actually surprised, that first, barely anyone mentioned the age problematic and second women love this horny character design same as much as men. Do streamer personalities speak for everyone? No, of course not. And people do in fact act differently in front of the camera. So there is that.

Another point on female streamers and youtubers is... They're exactly that, streamers/youtubers. While I don't doubt for a second there are many women excited about the game and don't recognise or care about the overt sexualisation, these people in particular are catering to certain audiences, and more often than not, trying to at least make some profit off monetisation. There's plenty of other variables that could be at play as well, such as women not really feeling comfortable making even the mildest of criticisms, especially on camera, when it could open them up to harassment.



This isn't really directed at anyone here in particular, but this brought up a memory of seeing someone on another forum post like 10+ different videos of women gushing about the first Stellar Blade game on youtube to "prove" his point that "women actually love the game", and it was just so cringe-inducing to witness.



In general it sometimes feels like far too much stock is put into youtubers/streamers' opinions. I'm sure many of us have witnessed, or been on the receiving end of, someone pulling up some 20+ minute long youtube video in response to an argument before, instead of, y'know, actually expressing your own opinions in your own words.



And using minorities as ammo for "you see? This person has an opinion that doesn't challenge my worldview or aligns with my own views, therefore it is the correct opinion and makes yours null and void" is even more infuriating, but of course exceedingly common because it's the path of least resistance that instantly makes one feel better about themselves.



I don't even doubt many people when they seem incredulous as to what the issues are, or what the "status quo" is, because we've all been conditioned to casual misogyny and other forms of bigotry growing up that by the time we're adults, it's so normalised we often don't even recognise it, and that goes doubly so for those that aren't on the receiving end of it.

The best part about all this is the mods just absolutely refuse to weigh in on the issue.

The way they're so slippery with words, and I know it can't be intentional because they aren't smart enough, is fascinating.

I'll assume for the sake of ease that it's true that chuds harassed some female cosplayers. Make the definition of "chud" as broad as necessary to find any person who has ever done this. But they surely harassed specific ones, not all of them. That would have been worthy of notice and it never got noticed so it probably didn't happen. And presumably they harassed them for reasons unrelated to their being cosplayers.

So then it's not really weird that they're citing cosplayers in defense because their disagreement with "female cosplayers" wasn't as a class it was with "female cosplayers who disagree with me." And now they're citing "female cosplayers who agree with me." The relevant variable is the "disagree/agree with me" axis, not the "female cosplayer" one. Yet this guy sees some kind of hypocrisy or offense because he presumed, since everything he listens to tells him this, that they simply hated females and couldn't possibly have some reason they hated specific females. That simply wouldn't make sense because a chud can never have concerns that feel legitimate to him, chuds always know their concerns are illegitimate!

I also doubt this "are just using them now" thing because if there's one thing anyone who has ever seen female cosplay knows, sexualized character designs have often dominated it and there's an entire blatantly pornographic ecosystem of cosplaying. I imagine none of these posters would like to engage with a certain theory, that cosplay offers an acceptable form of exhibitionism. You "can't" just walk around in a tight latex catsuit, but you can if you're cosplaying as Catwoman. As coffeecat informs us, women like being attractive too. It doesn't have to be "sexual", as in signaling "my vagina is open for cocks", but just for getting attention. And once you start teasing that out, you can see why "sexualized (aka conventionally attractive) character designs" isn't an inherent offense.
