That's often how I feel when I press the like button. 

It's not "I like this" so much as "I appreciate the effort you've gone to in revealing to me this thing I wish I never knew about, and if it one day contributes to my being able to kill people over the internet with my mind, you deserve a like".

I mostly like posts when they’ve made me laugh or for serious posts when I agree with the general sentiment.  Rarely I will drop a like to a post that has quoted me when I have nothing else to say just as a general acknowledgment that I have read what was typed out.  Like psychology

So I hopped onto Bluesky to see who needed mutual aid and to donate to everyone I see except Britt and instead found this:

All these people are in their late 20s according to their profiles. 27, 29, etc. There's also like way more tweets about this but I stopped trying to understand any of it the instant I clicked away from "Emmy" to look at the other profiles to see the ages. Emmy was abusing some guys (?) immigrant husband who has seizures or something and blah blah blah. I have no idea if these are all systems or what. Or who is what gender. Or if any of them have ever met in real life.

Informational Post #2: Fictionkin and Race
It’s likely you’ve seen someone on Tumblr with a disclaimer on their blog reading something along the lines of “I don’t identify outside my race”. This has become normal in the Tumblr kin community– particularly fictionkin– since about 2015, and is rooted in a severely messed up part of Tumblr history.

The gist of this story is that it is NOT racist to have kintypes of a different race, nor is it ableist to have kintypes that have disabilities you don’t, etc. etc.

The origin of the discourse that having kintypes of another race is racist came from the blog thisisnotjapan, made for calling out the cultural appropriation that is present among the anime community. The problem is that they are not otherkin, nor are they educated on the subject, and assumed that people with anime kintypes were trying to appropriate Japanese experiences or whitewash the characters. This assumption is entirely inaccurate, as ‘kin don’t believe themselves to physically be their kintypes in this life, not do they claim to fully understand the experiences of their other lives– particularly with reincarnation theory since it’s very possible to reincarnate into any number of races, kin or not. Even in stories of Earthly reincarnation, it’s been known that people of various races have had reincarnations from completely different ethnicities and societies.

This blog, however, was not the major problem and if not for the events that followed would’ve likely been forgotten by the kin community. Around late 2014, during the peak of callout culture, a group rose in the Tumblr kin community known as the Yandere Bitch Club, or YBC for short. Not much information about them remains online, but the main group consisted of four cis, white adult women who posed as Japanese transfeminine minors and claimed that it was racist to have kintypes outside your race. Because of the time at which this occurred, it was easy for these girls to use abuse and fear tactics such as falsifying callout posts and doxxing in order to get this idea to spread rapidly across the community, causing mass chaos. People were attacked for little reason and bullied to the point of being suicidal. They had many allies, including the infamous despairkomaeda (I won’t even begin to open that can of worms, look them up at your own risk) and became extremely influential due to the website’s climate. It was useless to argue with them directly (believe me, I tried) or to try and put some sense back into people (I also tried). The damage was done and the community changed drastically because of it. They caused a lot of problems for the DID/OSDD community as well, but I’m not an authority on that topic so I’ll leave that for a blog with more information on that community.

This is the reason why the community is the way it is today. There’s some minor discourses that contributed to one thing or another, but this is the main reason why the “Tumblrkin” community is so different from the otherkin community on other parts of the internet. The majority of people who remain afraid that having kintypes outside their race will get them sent vicious hate, and those who send that hate in the first place, likely have no idea that they’re a remnant of this era, and those who do don’t care, as the damage was already done and they now genuinely believe that these things are aggressions against other communities. Recently it’s been happening again on a smaller scale with things like disability and gender (particular for transgender people), the latter of which caused a lot of drama surrounding a few characters (particularly Pidge from Voltron in a notable case).

TL;DR, do not apologize for having kintypes of a different race, or pretend that you do not have them to avoid discourse. If you’re the one perpetuating this drama, know your history first and know exactly what the rhetoric you’re pushing has done to this community.
