see, maybe this is just me, but if you fucking hate AI, there is no better motivation to make a really good hand-made localization than if the only current existing translation is a machine translated one

That's not really how these things work because your average interested gamer or reader will immediately download and apply the first patch they see. Thus a sloppy machine translation becomes the default and damages the reputation of the game or series. 

Best move for quality control is to just exorcize and not allow it on reputable platforms.

Usually the immediate response to this by naysayers is by claiming translators are only interested in fame and they should be happy their legitimate translation is appreciated even if it's only by 5% of the available fanbase.

But it's not about fame, it's about making sure a great work isn't forever tarnished in the eyes of a majority by garbage work.

however, there's no guarantee that a holy human made translation is any better than a machine translated one, especially these days, and it's just as likely the human made one will be full of "all according to keikaku (translator's note: keikaku means plan)"

blocking them like this just incentivizes people to lie and say they did it manually when they did not, or like even if they did a lot of it manually and a little via AI, they would simply never admit the minor AI use

You are conflating someone using machine translation to help themselves translating (while not necessarily using the translation as it is) and others just outright using for everything and claiming is good enough (and getting uppity when people call them out).

We went to LA for a holiday last year. I was surprised by how dirty and full of homeless it was. I remember walking a block down from the tourist area and finding an myself in some sort of 3rd world hobo land. it was disgusting. There seems to be no buffer areas between the rich and the poor which probably makes it worse. When we went to NY I expected it to be dirty and full of scum. It turned out be pretty clean and I felt safe enough to go wandering about at all hours. LA had nice weather and all that but it wasn't what I expected.

I had a similar experience back in 2015, but swap out LA with San Francisco.

Went to work for 8 am, realised the person I needed to budge had gone on leave yesterday when I was on leave. Disaster! Anyway while I was working out what to do I realised I was making loads of notes. When I'd finished sorting out the thing I then had this wealth of material I could use to write a guide for what I was doing for the next person. So I got into copilot for an hour and a half and came out with a literal, honest to god guide as to how to do this difficult governance process with an attached template guide for answers to submit into the tool, to the point where an idiot could do it. I actually enjoyed doing this. Left at 1pm.

A couple years ago people were hyping real time translation in emulators. There was an understanding it wouldn’t be on the level of a fan patch. If you’re playing an obscure PC Engine game and needed basic information, it was sufficient. Now it is the great evil. How they justify using google translate. Or text auto correct. Or anything using speedtree. Nuance on any topic is nonexistent. I understand being upset over the upcoming Supergirl movie being made entirely in seedance. But still. There are levels.

Honestly, I hope that a game like Tomb Raider's recently announced one falls way short of internal projections. It'll still sell well by being a popular IP, but I hope they struggle to recoup expenses on it and that their metrics show them that lost a sizable chunk of their audience. My hope is that there are enough people sticking to their principles and ethics on AI when these games boast AI usage to the point where it's felt by the publishers.

Selected all of the above, but then again I'm going to go against the grain of many on this forum that just repeats "slop slop slop" all day and I'm an AI/ML Scientist with doctoral training so I'm automatically going to have a take that isn't sometimes worth repeating here just to get dogpiled.



GenAI is a nuanced, complex technology and its implications. It objectively has the potential to reduce a lot of tedium for creators and scientists and engineers in both personal and professional settings when used appropriately and ethically, such as reducing trial-and-error and rapid prototyping and cognitive multi-tasking/tedium that otherwise would have to have been done manually. It can reduce outsourcing inefficiencies which can theoretically expand time available for creators to focus on more tasks GenAI can't do well, like nuanced judgmental decision-making, team work, and subjective analyses, as well as human attention to detail. There's a lot to say on this topic but I'll just say it's too much to slice apart in one thread or one post even, let alone to field dogpiling from people that just have "slop slop slop" ctrl + v ready at their fingers to respond to anything remotely neutral or positive that can be said about GenAI. So I just sigh and shrug, it's not my place or intent to defend a technology thrown under the bus of lazy and greedy corporate execs laying off creators and artists for unethical reasons. But I do see potential for it to amplify gaming and help reduce some of the bloated costs and redundancies in tedium in game development if implemented ethically, while also knowing that we can't trust these companies such as Microsoft to really do both in tandem while keeping people employed.



Like I said, a nuanced topic, but that's the most effort I can really write out right now.
