On Monday, Zitron came through, sharing OpenAI financial data that was leaked to him. He regularly publishes 15,000 word posts, but this time he kept it short and sweet, explaining that “Due to the seriousness of this story, I am not going to do very much editorializing, as the numbers speak for themselves.” While OpenAI’s losses are, as we’ll soon see, significant, the uncharacteristic lack of analysis may better reflect the fact that the numbers don’t actually comport with the story Zitron has been selling.

The ChatGPT creator has a tough financial road ahead of it, and the amount of money it expects to lose before becoming profitable overall ($115 billion) is nearly four-times higher than the most money a company ever burned before reaching profitability (Uber’s $31.5 billion).

It might not get there.

But all that distracts from the fact that Zitron pulled out the linchpin in his own case that the whole industry is a bubble. His data shows definitively that OpenAI makes far more from ChatGPT than it costs to serve, even while serving it to hundreds of millions of free users. And the vast majority of its users pay nothing: with 900 million weekly active users and just 50 million paying subscribers as of February.

The reflecting pool saga has been great.

First it was painted with some bright blue and people on the left started saying that it'll look horrible and like some cheap swimming pool, then the pool was finished and it started reflecting normally and then the people on the right went on a big "told you so!" and how only Trump could have accomplished this (amusingly some on the left also claimed that the reflection in photographs had to be AI) and then came the final twist, the prestige if you will, and the algae returned with a vengeance and the whole pool is now green like Mountain Dew.

I'm most in love with the idea that there's this vast criminal conspiracy funded by Soros' unlimited money and their big terrorist plot was to do something that the workers took care of a couple hours later by just pouring in some stuff they probably had in a maintenance shed somewhere.

This is how terrible things are these days, we can't even get our criminal terrorist conspiracies to drop any bodies. It's all just petty shit because the cruelty is the point.

The fact that the murder happened is tragic. The fact that there was a circumstance in which that could even come to pass is tragic, and all of that is a reflection of systems that allowed that circumstance to be possible. And so, you know, I have always focused my attention on  how do we create systems where that's not even the possibility.

This is the very much the progressive position, that everything is the result of a human-created system. So you can theoretically have a system where murders don't even happen, you just have to find it. Gender, scarcity, violence, etc. are all just manifestations of the systems. They fundamentally believe there are no limitations on humans, that it's only a matter of the will to achieve it.

Your refusal to accept a world where anything is possible is you running defense for the status quo versus imagining what is possible.
