When I was a teenager I got dragged to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a school trip to see some kind of opera, and they set me up in the front row of the top balcony, which was EXTREMELY close to the edge. At some point during the show I blacked out for a few seconds, and when I woke up I was leaning forward with the top part of my body dangling over the guardrail. I was extremely lucky I woke up when I did, because I don't think it would've taken much effort to send me sailing over that edge into the audience below me.

All that is to say that this has been a fear living in my brain ever since that day. I don't know what specific circumstances led that dude to fall off the balcony himself but it's something that's lived with me for a while. I get that upper-level balconies can't have super high guardrails in order to ensure the people sitting in them can actually SEE the stage, but I wish there was a more elegant (and safe) solution.

It seems the cultural rebellion against big tech I've been hoping for is starting to happen, and I want in on it. Anyone ever been to any of these events? They all seem to be in public spaces in NYC and are completely offline.

While I get the idea, I can't help but side-eye most who fall into this group a bit because a lot of them in my experience inevitably end up past Huxley and more somewhere around Unibomber the more you talk to them, sometimes with a bit of incel sprinkled in.

I don't begrudge the young their ideology most times tho. I was young and a firebrand once, so I generally just listen with open ears and try to have empathy if they're not exactly the most sound. Believing in something that heavy generally takes a passion I feel gets lost in a lost of people around 30 or so, so let the young feel their big feels, experience them, and shape them a bit I say.

After watching the interview, I don't think I'd necessarily categorize what's going on here that way. These people (the ones heading it anyway) actually sound very educated. This is not at all an anti-intellectual, anti-technology movement.

Again, please take a bit of time to watch the interview. This seems to be a very thoughtful and intentful movement with intentions of impacting real political and infrastructural change.

Touche. But still, if you know a bit of history, you'll know that the original Luddite movement was not what they were made out to be in popular culture. That is of course because the victors write history, and the Luddite uprising had to be crushed by more military force than was deployed by England during the Napoleonic wars. Literally, there had to be more troops deployed to quell them than in actual large scale wars of that era.

These were worker rebellions that were popular with the general public at that time for good reason: they weren't against technology but rather being cut out of the equation altogether or being subjugated/exploited by it.

Lastly, I'm in my 40s and have a family. What they are saying does not sound the least bit crazy to me at all. It sounds like what needs to happen to right the ship.

There is something else going on, something more ideological. No, only the less cautious articulate the real reason, what many quietly believe: that AI will reinvent human existence.

The eugenicist Julian Huxley predicted this as far back as 1957. He wrote then that “a thousand million years of evolution” would lead to a moment when man, harnessing his “modern control of physical nature” would “transcend himself”—would achieve a new state of being. Today’s technologists believe that moment is now.

For Huxley, this was a religion all its own. “I believe in transhumanism,” he liked to say. And so do untold numbers of today’s tech class.

That is the vision—the religion and ideology—that animates so much of the breathless race for artificial intelligence … and for artificial general intelligence … and super-intelligence, and beyond: for the day when humans are no longer embodied beings at all but live infinitely in the cloud.

The technologists have discovered Gilgamesh’s plant, they believe. The question is, can America survive their quest for immortality? Can the republic?

When it comes to transhumanist ideology, it does seem easy to dismiss at one level. All those ultra-billionaires sleeping in pressure-controlled chambers and applying their youth serums, taking a hundred supplement pills a day and monitoring their every bodily function—the picture is fairly absurd.

And anyway, if the friendly neighborhood billionaire wants to spend his fortune trying to live forever, why should I care? Do as you please.

But there is a more sinister aspect to the transhumanist ideal, one that Julian Huxley, the eugenicist, inadvertently captured. When he wrote, back in 1957, about the new kind of human existence science would make possible, he was all too clear about just who would be leading humanity to this exalted state.

“The universe is becoming conscious of itself,” he said, “in a few of us human beings.”

In a few of us. There is the clue. Huxley could wax eloquent about the universe appointing man “director of the biggest business of all, the business of evolution”—much as today’s transhumanists rhapsodize about living to the twenty-fifth century and curing every known disease for the sake of mankind. But Huxley didn’t mean it and neither do his successors.

When Huxley said Nature or the Universe or whatever had given “man” the opportunity to redirect human evolution, he did not mean all men, anymore than today’s transhumanists believe their billion-dollar health regimens will be accessible to all people. Huxley meant some men. He meant “a few of us.” The better sort. The anointed. The elite.

And transhumanism is, when you think about it, an elite project by definition. It is all about overcoming the common and ordinary experiences of mankind: common limits, common weaknesses, common lives … even common loves. The goal is to replace “the common” with something else. Which means replacing common people.

I saw that Stellar Blade tweet and the reference to DOA and istg I'm so tired with the sexualisation in fighting games and how much clickbait there is amongst content creators. A user posted a video in the street fighter thread (no hate to the user btw it was a combo video or guide or something but the thumbnail was of a shot from cammy's CA while in her classic thong leotard and it was soo in your your face. I mention this because someone last night on twitter pointed out that if you google Chun-Li one of the images that pops up right away is this (a thumbnail to one of max's video) 
 
And I've seen replies to that tweet from others basically confirming that they got the same thing when they searched Chun-Li (so I assume it's true and not a big meme). I don't think I really need to explain the problems with this here, but it just left me with an awful taste in my mouth and while everyones joking about it and finding it funny it is symbolic of so many issues in the fgc and potentially contributing to the rises of harassment that's been happening as I posted about a week or two ago

I also just decided to test it and that video pops up bigger and more centrally in the overview than a tutorial video on how to play her. I'm tired

  

I can't see your images but it's been a thing in fighting games forever. Tournaments are full of players that use the most revealing costumes 'to try and psyche out' their opponents. I hate that the industry gives lip service to equality but goes out of their way to make sure everyone knows it's really 'for the boys' at its core. By the industry I mean Capcom, Namco and SNK and it does show up in other smaller maker's work but to a lesser extent. Every version of SF I'm shocked by how revealing they make the swimsuit costumes. I get that fighting game characters are supposed to be peak humanity but woah, pump the brakes developers. Or try and make something interesting instead of just skimpy.

 

I've never had people reacting to characters in that way before when I search for a character and I often search characters up, I did it loads recently while trying to piece the timeline together and characters ages, so yeah this is a new thing for me. You're not wrong in anything you say about lip service, tournaments and the SF6 swimsuits but the fact reaction images like that appear in the AI overview that googles forced on us, it's just adding a layer of conditioning to anyone who looks up characters in how they should be acting/treating these characters.
