Today a reseterian learns not to fuck with locksmiths. 

I have nothing to ask, just wanting to maybe ease the burden.

A locksmith who is particularly shady and doesn't want to bank my check, has told me yesterday he will 'cut me into pieces' if I don't give him 'real' money. This morning he left a message saying he is coming and it won't be fun, or some shit.
Police won't help unless he is literally at the door.
I have to fill a complaint in person for them to call him. It is 40c and I certainly won't leave my mother alone in the apartment.

I'm not having fun. I moved the heaviest furniture I could behind the main door, to at least slow him down for the time it will take for the police to come.

Wonder if the guy is full of hot air (he screams like a lunatic on the phone, though), if I will end up murdered or if will simply croak with the blood pressure spikes.

Please carry on, I at least needed to share that.

It's more messy than that and I am fully disposed to say I'm not blameless.

Basically :

Asked beforehand, doesn't take check.
Tried several card payments, rejected (I confirmed with my bank the fault was his terminal).
He leave with a check saying that I contact my bank and we exchange payment method the day after.
Can't for the life of me contact the bank on phone the next day, leave it at that, the guy has a check.
He call the day after and is already extremely bossy about what I need to do.
I tell him to cool down and just take the check.
The guy goes nuclear.

Again, if the motherfucker didn't scream his lungs out he will kill me and today said he would come and it won't be fun, I would have made the effort to pay him by now, even if it stinks of a con from high heaven.

Yesterday the bank I finally had a conversation with confirmed that I can totally wire him the money instantly, no security wait needed.

But I can't contact him, he is nuclear. The tone in his voice when he said he would come is not the tone of a sane person.

Retard.

He called a locksmith, needed to get in ASAP and couldn't actually communicate with the guy. Who grudgingly took the check. Then the next day got all these other convoluted stories and got pissed. So the poster thinks he legitimately was going to come murder him and so he's moving furniture in front of the door and getting a neighbor for a witness (who he thinks has a good basis for a lawsuit against this obvious criminal scammer) because he thinks a small business man is legitimately going to murder him and his mom. Because actually it's not a business, it's a scam and he's been found out. And he has no clue how anything works even as Era tells him differently because he's not actually interested or capable of dealing with the issue as evidenced by his inability to even use texts. (Also the way everything he explains is worded as if it's straightforward obvious and something everyone knows and he can't understand why anyone doesn't get it, must be cultural differences, and not that it's totally incoherent and missing obviously important information that should come to mind immediately.)

To be fair, it's not the first time some of us comment about it in threads like these. Whether if it's in the context of "look, these people got laid off", or "this company is making this game because they hired THIS person", "this game is in trouble because these people left", it's just not okay to share people's posts and profiles outside of their intended audience. I'm a game developer, I'm not a reality show contestant. My life status, my career, my background should not be entertainment for people on the internet. You are not looking at our profiles and making a change. You are just sitting at a screen looking at our demise and feeling sorry for us, and then driving more people to look at us. We really don't need that.



I might be posting that I'm looking for a job in a platform made for networking and letting others know that you are available to be hired, but I'm not looking to see that being discussed by people on enthusiast forums. It's not doing anything to help, and it's not bringing visibility. If you are in a position in which you can help or hire any developer that has been laid off, you are already on LinkedIn. It goes the same when we update our profiles and CVs and say stuff "working on an open world game releasing in 2026", or "working on this IP which got cancelled". It's not meant to be information that is permeated to the public, in fact, sometimes we are walking the line in breaking NDA for the sake of having 0.001% more chances for our profile to stand out during a screening process. And then someone who doesn't have much more to do than to get into company pages and check if they are making their favorite game or if their expected game is releasing in November or December 2030, makes a thread about it. Here, on twitter, on reddit. It's the same. We don't need people going into our profiles, checking where we live, where we studied, our skillset... specially in the rise of AI.



For anybody that wants to help, please do pressure and cause a PR problem for the executives and companies that have laid off so many people unresponsibly lately. But don't put the focus on developers themselves unless they have expressed their intent to take things publicly. Having a thread with the pictures and names of the people that have had their lives likely twisted as some sort of cry for help/protest but then having a hype thread for an upcoming release/next console from the same people that caused the issue it's just dystopical.



At the end of the day, I understand people might be trying to help and they are legit concerned for the industry they spend multiple hours a day engaged with. But games are your entertainment. Not developers. I hope with what happened with that thread, awareness is raised and we avoid situations like this in the future. We also need people to understand that some of us have a short fuse at the moment, since on top of everything that's currently happening, we are eithe crunching knowing that we're getting fired likely in the next 2-3 years, or seeing people we appreciate lose their jobs and post pretty bleak stuff on a daily basis.

I would argue that you're 100% wrong and it is definitely newsworthy. It's the job of these outlets to cover the industry and that requires actually covering it. That Bloomberg, one of the best outlets in terms of business reporting, is covering it should tell everyone that the right thing to do in this situation is to cover the hell out of the leaks.

There are also many reputable resources and journalists reporting and providing opinion pieces about topics and products that are rightfully banned for discussion in this forum. It's one thing to report that Insomniac had a ransomware attack, and that many of their future projects got leaked, along with personal data. That's information reporting and it's ethical. Another thing is to flat out post the entire information contained in the slides, videos and images showing prototypes and concepts of games they still intended to publish, and more. And let me clarify once again, my stance has been the same for Rockstar, Capcom and now Insomniac, before anyone jumps in. A lot of fellow developers have explained why and how it would help for this forum to officially just not participate in the discourse, and that some of us expected better from ResetEra at least (this is not a news outlet, this is a community that likes to take pride on their support for developers). I understand it will drive visits away and that part of the appeal of the forum is getting that tiny "inside view" into the industry with exclusive leaks and first hand info, but if we're going to use the "all sites do it so it's good to do it" when there are reputable sources covering banned topics in here, then we need to be prepared to be challenged on those decisions too. And I say this with all due respect, but I'm getting an air of "fuck game developers unless our websites can exploit their drama taking about crunch, consolidation and TGA speeches" out of this thread that it's just not what someone in the industry would expect from a forum that wants to distinguish themselves from the usual Reddit, Twitter or 4chan discourse.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be the first one to criticize decisions made by business people, studios like Level-5 whose output is subpar and to express my negative views on games I dislike like Dirge of Cerberus. Sharing your frustrations, your negative opinion or ways on how you would improve the game itself is okay, but not at the cost of insulting the developer's professionality or skillset, or even their overall humanity.
